You don't get a complete new Windows 10 ("fresh install") anymore.  The new update procedure only installs what modules are needed.  This speeds up the download since it doesn't download a complete new OS.

On the systems I've upgraded, the PC still runs (visually) the same speed as before.

Steev .... I really like Edge browser's new ability to "Read Aloud" anything printed from websites, Adobe Reader,  and eBooks. Not that I don't love to read, but now I can listen while doing other mundane tasks.
It works best with "Reading View" enabled. If not, it reads everything on the web page including adds..

Yes .. nice feature. However when I set the view to READING VIEW then READ ALOUD is greyed out in the menu.

Way around it is to HIGHLIGHT the text you want read in normal view. It will only read selected text ..

I've just got off the phone to microsoft support and I'm not happy :-(

For those out there who use windows media player and have large music libraries I'm afraid you're either going to have to use another player or avoid the current, "1709" (Fall) Update because microsoft have just told me that they are dropping media player and it won't be able to play MP3's any more.

Not sure what I'm going to do, I have VLC player but I much prefer the lay out of media player when it comes to libraries and microsofts other player, "groove music" is just horrible in comparison.

Would it be worth a look at the Windows 10 app store for other media players that may be similar to Windows Media Player? Surely many nice media players there now besides VLC etc?

Does it make sense to the computer gurus on this forum that some users would have these all these missing .dll files and other users would have no problem at all? My computer hasn't updated itself yet, but I am so NOT a computer troubleshooting guy, and I am just mortified at the thought of Splat being inoperable because of a stupid Windows update. I hope I'm lucky enough to be someone whose system still works fine after the update.

Keep in mind guys .. BEFORE updating windows 10 in general its probably best to temp uninstall your AV software, but even before doing that make sure you clear any malware on your system.

Also HP systems ( and other makes ) tend to have lots of HP bloat utilities that no longer work in windows 10 I have found. Uninstall all that type stuff too if you can before any upgrades.

And you definitely have the Fall update?
Mine plays some but for no reason that I can see refuses to play others and there is no apparent difference between the ones that do play and the ones that don't in terms of bit rate and other properties.

It's strange that yours do play, have you been through a lot of random MP3's to make sure?

The woman I spoke to at microsoft was quite certain that Windows media player is being dropped but couldn't tell me why my copy would play some MP3's and not others so she may well have been wrong in so much as, the fact WMP was being dropped had nothing to do with my problem which I suspect is the case.

My friends laptop has windows 10 without the new update and media player plays the MP3's fine.

I found this article about WMP.  http://www.fudzilla.com/n...s-windows-media-player

Either way, I am certain that the update has done something, reinstalling media player and deleting it's library hasn't resolved it so I'm now going through the 100's of players in the app store which is not something I wanted to be doing but perhaps I'll get really excited about a player that's everything I ever dreamed a media player could be and wonder where it's been all my life.

I have the 1709 update, Win 10 Pro.  There were several MP3's listed under "Music" when I opened WMP.  I tried 3 of them and they all worked.  I didn't try any others as I don't have many MP3's, almost everything I have is wav files.
