I was getting ready for bed one night about a month ago, and stood there watching my wife sleep for a minute, I started thinking about the 1st time I met her (some15 years ago at this point) and while I was brushing my teeth and stuff this song hit my like a truck...  Needless to say I didn't sleep much that night as I was out in the studio 3 minutes later laying down scratch tracks so I didn't lose it.   I tracked the original drum line to my scratch tracks (with a click) and while it was nearly the same performance, I had a friend stopped by (who was the drummer in a past band we did together) and he liked the track, I asked since the drums were still mic'd up if he wanted to take a crack at it?  He said sure!   His tracks had a little more swing in them and felt better so I went with his and tracked the guitars, bass, vocals, and even a tambourine part myself.   I have been working on the mix off and on for a couple weeks and think I am pretty close at this point so I figured I'd ask you guys to critique the crap out of it before I make any final tweaks.  Thanks for your time!!

I think it sounds okay. Different in headphones than my speakers which seemed to be more balanced (headphones the left channel seemed louder). All I can say is that compared to a couple of others people's songs the mix is loud, loud, loud, and I had to turn down the volume to listen to it. It's right up there with the loudness wars I guess. Otherwise in the speakers I think the balance seemed okay. Hot - yes the song is hot. Sounded fine (except to me so loud). But then it is that kind of a song.
Fine then for what I could tell about it.

I appreciate you checking it out Spacealf,   I just listened on earbuds here on my laptop and I don't hear any imbalance between channels.  It is a hot mix but I didn't crush it, I have an average RMS around -10.7  at times jumping up to about -8.6 RMS.  I was curious so I just pulled the mp3 file into Audacity (cheap freebee Daw I have on my laptop that I used to use for mp3 conversion) and took a screenshot so I could show you the WAV form.

No doubt, I wanted it hot but I am still not competing with pro releases in the genre  They are just brickwalled to hell.  This is by no means a square wave.  I wanted it dynamic and punchy.  Thanks again for your time man!

I really like this tune!  It is mixed loudly but I like that because I can control the volume here without maxing all the volume knobs.  Mix sounds good to me.  How many tracks do you use for drums.  Each drum mic'd?  I think they sound good.

dig the energy
like the rhythm tracks

mix item:
i hear the attack of the snare, but not quite enough body.
don't have a suggestion about how to get there, but make that snare smack a little more.

production item:
i like the fluty-sounding-one note repeat lead guitar part during the 'so damn hot' choruses..
but you need something else to set it off...
suggestion:
add a harmony part, with a different tone, at the 2nd time around...
and layer a 2nd harmony part on top of the 1st on the 3rd time around...
that way, it's always changing, but still supporting the chorus.

Warren-Thanks bud,   The drums were Mic'd up as follows:  (mostly shure mics)
pg52 on the kick (outside of soundport)
sm57 on kick (pointing through sound port at beater head to get more click/attack.  Works better for me as putting it on the beater side gets a lot of snare bleed)
57- on snare top
SDC-snare bottom
pg56's on the 3 toms (though he never hit the 1st tom so it's not in the mix at all)
SDC condensor pair as overheads, then 1 on hats, 1 on the ride.
I also run a mono large diaphragm condensor - room mic.
So that's a total of 12 mic's on a live kit.   Used EQ, A little sonitus verb (a preset I have come up with that I like for drums on aggressive stuff like this)
Some parallel compression to give it a little more backbone.

Bapu- Thanks for the listen!

Bats - I hear you there and it doesn't surprise me that you picked up on that too (I really like a lot of your productions).  That snare was something I fought with myself over for a couple of hours towards the end of this mix.  That's not to say I wont keep trying to make it better.   But I needed that bright attack to get the rolls in the versus distinct, which has the effect of thinning it a little in the choruses.  I guess I could get more in-depth and split them to separate tracks to eq the parts differently.  I kinda wanted (to some extent) to have the snare rolls blend into the guitar X's in the versus and have it be almost one sound which it did too well and I had to sharpen the snare above the guitars a little, and dip the guitars in the upper competing frequencies a little to get here.

I like my rhythm sounds here too.  I spent about 45 minutes getting a 57 & my 421 in the perfect phase correlation before I started tracking them.  The left is my Dillion -American made tele copy, the right is my trusty ole Ibanez.  Both through a line6 XT live, Bugera HD55 head & Hartke 412 cab.

I might play around with that idea on the lead line.  I kinda wanted that blending in in the choruses otherwise it competes with the vocal for your attention.  I added that part mainly because when I was tracking I got used to and liked the way the metronome on the track kinda made the chorus feel bouncy.  So I wanted to add an element to keep that vibe, I decided not to over-think it and just Keep it Simple Stupid, or in this case Stupid Simple.

Chuck, this song is incendiary!  I'm impressed with the way you got your RMS level so high without overpeaking the mix.  I have a feeling by the time this is done, it will be a terrific rock song.  Way to follow your muse.

Chuck,

Great high-energy song.   I am sure your wife appreciated it as well.   15 years is a bit of time,   25 for me and I feel the same way.   Good mix and performance.   I could imagine some nice BGV during the chorus's but it is good as is as well..
