  • Would be interested to hear everyone's Mixbus workflows (again)!

I'm sure people have talked about this before but I'd be very interested to hear how people are using Mixbus. I've had it for ages but have shied away from learning it fully and have never yet completed a full serious mix in it, have only played with it. I really do like what it does to the sound once you start building up a few tracks in it.

Anyway I guess people have the full spectrum of uses for it, all the way from importing stereo mixes for mastering, to tracking and mixing a full project from start to finish.

My intention is to track and arrange (and perhaps "rough" mix) everything in Sonar, then import all track stems to Mixbus. But even here, I see that there are a number of different ways I could go given Mixbus's track and bus routing options.

For instance, I see that I could set up all of my reverb and delay buses in Sonar, print these buses and import them into Mixbus. If I have 3 reverb stems I could import those into Mixbus and send them to one of the 8 Mixbuses. But in that case, I would be committing to doing at least some of the mix in Sonar because if I was printing reverbs in Sonar then presumably I'd want to EQ the signals before they hit the reverbs etc. Same with things like delay buses. Not sure I want to go down this route as I rather like the idea of doing ALL of my mixing in Mixbus, not just for the sound but for the psychological benefit of closing down the tracking phase and starting the mix afresh with nothing but finished stems.

I see that Mixbus also has "utility buses" like Pro Tools' aux tracks - are you using these as effects sends? I'm not sure how this works but I see myself perhaps setting up 2 or 3 reverb utility buses and then sending the outputs of these to a reverb mixbus, then doing the same with delays etc. So my mixbuses would end up as (for example) Vocals, Keys + Leads, Bass, Drums, Reverbs, Delays. But what about things like parallel processing? If you were parallel compressing drums would you do that via a utility bus and then route the output to the drum mixbus?

I guess this is something which will become obvious to me but right now I'm kind of overwhelmed by the possibilities.

I prefer to make and save presets in my reverb and delay plugins and just export the raw edited (non-dithered 32bit floating) .wav files from Sonar and import them into Mixbus, and then start again from scratch.
8 buses is plenty for me...so it's never an issue.
I plan on using Mixbus a lot this year, so my workflow will change I'm sure. I've been tracking a bit in it just for fun and to learn the program better. Amp sims sure seem to sound better in it.

You think it's better to export from Sonar as 32 bit rather than 24 bit?

I'm not sure I would hear the difference either way to be honest, but it would seem to make sense to keep everything un-altered for as long as possible. Maybe someone who knows more will chime in.
I don't have enough experience with Mixbus to make too many suggestions just yet, but I know it's fun to use and like you...I like to switch my brain from the recording stage to the mixing stage, and then the mastering stage.

I suspect that on a technical level if you have SONAR set to record 32bit then it only makes sense to export 32bit especially if your Mixbus is operating at 32bit.

That's what I think too, but I'm honest enough to admit that I can't a difference either way!
Doesn't Sonar record at 32bit by default?

Tonight I was playing with Mixbus and I did a Drag & Drop of a midi file onto a midi track. I instantiated Addictive Keys as I figured it would not take much resources.

I really wanted to see if Mixbus would play nice with midi stuff and I got a real surprise. It played very well and the Mixbus EQ & Comp gave an inexpensive thin sounding piano a very nice warm sound. I just hate it because now I am going to try to do midi things in Mixbus it probably is not ready for yet...

For a while I was really disappointed the way v3 started out but v3.1 has put some new life and possibilities into it. It still has some issues but is to the point I am inspired to use it again.

To be honest I've never tried to use MIDI in it yet and I don't think I intend to, even if it turns out to be perfectly adequate. I just like the idea of bringing finished audio into it because it will stop my infernal tendency to tinker with MIDI and synths. I've ruined great parts by tinkering with them too much and I have to stop doing it.

I don't notice much of a sound difference when playing one track through Mixbus, it's when it's summing multiple tracks that I really notice an improvement over plain DAW's.

I am interested to hear how people route things in Mixbus though. In terms of which instruments are bussed together.

I have a Vocal bus, Guitar bus, Bass and Keys bus, Drums bus and a reverb bus. That's good enough for me, but I'm a simple guy.
