  • Question about Melodyne... Should I get it?

I've been using the Melodyne Trial on my X1 for a week or so now, and although I think it has the potential to work well, it just isn't right now.

I understand there are two ways to use Melodyne within X1 (disregarding Melo's standalone mode for now), either as a plugin for a track or as a ReWire device. I am having problems with both, and if I can gather a solution from this community, maybe I will decide to actually purchase Melo.

1) VST plugin: When I add Melo as a VST plugin into a track, and use the "Transfer" feature to get my vocals onto Melo, I seem to get a lot of performance and functionality issues. First and foremost, the interface is really sluggish and unresponsive. When I pan around, zoom around, resize the window, etc Melo is really laggy. Also, I cannot set the playback time from within Melo, so I need to go back to Sonar every time I want to specify where playback should begin. And finally, keyboard shortcuts don't work in the VST mode.

2) ReWire device: It seems that using Melo as a ReWire device fixes all of the problems above that I mentioned for the VST mode. However, there is one major problem. When I transfer the vocal to Melo (by dragging the clip from Sonar into the Melo interface), I can NEVER get the vocals to align correctly in Melo. No matter how exact I try to be, and no matter how much I try to utilize the snap settings in both Sonar and Melo, it is always off beat.

If someone can help me figure out how to use either of the above modes without the problems I have (preferably firewire) I would definitely proceed in purchasing Melodyne. Thanks in advance!

As far as rewire goes, for accurate alignment, you first need to crop your wav to a beat (snap to whole) and then bounce to clip. (I don't like the destructive part of the bounce but that's the way it works for me). And then drag it over to melo.

Actually, I did a pretty lame, LOL, video of the process a while ago:

Ah, so YOU are the creator of that video! I've seen that video before, and actually used it before to set up my Melodyne Rewire (thanks for that!).

As for alignment, I actually did exactly what you showed in that video. However, whenever I dragged the clip to Melodyne, instead of placing the clip where it belongs (as it did in your video) my Melo placed it at the beginning of my song. I do not know how to make it go to the correct position as it did on yours.

Maybe it's because I am using a different version of Sonar/Melodyne than you?

Glad it helped. I feel sort of famous now:)

There is a snap button (on the right) in melo that maybe has something to do with accurate alignment.

I've tried melo in X1 and it works fine. I think that was 32 bit though. Don't remember.

I don't have those issues with the VST version.   I sue melodyne Assitant (single-track) though, if that matters.

You guys don't get that problem with the VST version?

FWIW, for me, the VST version is a PITA unless I'm just doing a quick tweak on one or two things. Mostly because the transport doesn't work right.

Did you check the Melodyne site for the specific tips on using it in Sonar as a VST?  Particularly the main one, that your latency/samples need to be put to 1024 or more when using it?

no - I work with 2 screens so I dock Melodyne in one and have Sonar open in the other - I can still see where I am in the song that way. Which version are you demoing?
