i am wondering what is the advantage of installing 64bit over 32bit... which is more stable

I would expect neither is more stable over the other.

I stick with the 32 bit version because I've had trouble with some VST instruments under 64 bit host.

The worst for me was Dimension Pro 64 under Cubase 64.  When I went to Cubase 32, and Dimension Pro 32, the problems went away.

A few days ago I tried to open one of the sample projects under X1 64 bit, and it issued a number of complaints about "missing things".  I don't remember the details, but I just closed X1 64 bit and opened the project with X1 32 bit and the messages did not appear again.

thank for the reply... what do everyone else think about 32bit vs 64bit?

Using 64-bit X1 here, no issues at all with performance or VST usage

TKP, would you be so kind as to list your most often used VST's?

I'm curious what the union set might be between your list and my list.

Thanks!

Being able to use more than 4GB RAM if your system has it.

Sure Pos, I most frequently use Superior Drummer 2, EZ Player, Kontakt 4, Dimension Pro, Rapture, and Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 in my current project since installing X1 and X1a. All 64-bit.  I have licences for BFD2, RealStrat and Saxlab, the latter two which are only still 32-bit to my knowledge but I have decided to consolidate my VST's since moving 64-bit and will only load them up if really required or if 64-bit versions are released. I have loaded up and successfully ran 32-bit versions of DimPro, Rapture and GPO4 under bitbridge but as the 64-bit versions are also available to me I cannot see the reason to use them.

I dont get crashes, everything ran first time from a clean Win 7 64-bit implementation. I came to the forum here a few times durning the upgrade process, mainly to resolve configuration and placement of VST directories / files, its all good.

Main advantage is that of additional memory utilisation as the libraries used by SD2, Kontakt and GPO can be large and by also upgrading my memory to 8GB from 4GB I have removed all of the limitations of my previous 32-bit Vista implementation previously installed on the same DAW hardware.

Hi again.  Of the ones you've listed, I most use Kontakt 4, Dim Pro, and an older version of GPO.

I have thought about doing what you've done, going "pure 64 bit", but have been too chicken.  And I'm a bit too fond of some older 32-bit only VSTs, many of which are no longer under development.  Not quite ready to scrap them.

It may be a good idea for me to visit KVR to see if I can find some alternatives for some of my oldies-but-goodies.  And if I stopped being lazy, I might find some already contained in Komplete 6 or 7....heh.

I've also been thinking about getting the RealGuit, RealStrat, and RealLP, but having a hard time with the $500 price tag.  There is/was a discount, but I had to spend four digits recently on some car maintenance items.  Better to fix than to get into a new car payment, yes.  But it will take me a bit to recover.

I figure I don't have to feel forced to make any harsh decisions until my next system build, which probably won't happen until 2012 or 2013, unless something breaks sooner...

I just recently installed X1 on a brand new Win7 64bit machine.  I set out to only install X1 32.  But I ran into some issues simply because the 32bit VST's reside now in a different folder path - Program Files (x86).  Perfect Space in particular goofed things up.  So I decided to try SonarX1 64bit to see if it were better.  And because I went through the trouble to get X1 64bit working perfectly (with 32bit and 64bit plugins) I run only SonarX1 64bit.  I cannot tell any difference really however, I read somewhere that latency automatically improves with 64bit.  If that's the case it will help me play my virtual instruments in real time - haven't really tested this yet.
