  • Pro Channel FX Order??

Has anyone noticed any peculiarities when using certain Pro Channel FX in particular order? For example....leaving the PC76 in its default position as the first insert, followed by the EQ and then inserting the PC2A following the EQ or replacing the tube emulator with the PC2A???
When in this configuration, we are experiencing very hit and miss operation of the PC2A. ( volume will work but no gain reduction, ect )
This a common vocal chain that I love but have had limited results with it in Pro Channel....

I have posted before about strange behavior of the PC2A, but got no response.  Sometimes having to delete it and re#insert it to get it to work.

I've not considered it being an order thing, but now that you say that, I'm starting to wonder.  I often have the PC76, followed by EQ and then the PCLA myself.  76 catching the quick peaks, then that lovely LA sound.  I also use it for almost every vocal track.

I thought I was the only one, as no one has responded when I've brought this up in a thread.

Hmmm, very interesting then. This was our favorite UA vocal chain and very much wanted to recreate it using the Pro Channel versions but to date hav'nt been able to consistantly. The PC2A is a very good emulation and is used on many tracks because of that, just cant seem to get it to act consistantly.
Re-inserting it didnt seem to work for us...allthough, choosing a 'preset' from the dropdown list and then inserting the PC2A would sometimes 'wake it up'

While reading this topic, I was wanting  to write anyway to ask the forum: - what are some preferred Pro Channel Fx ordering preferences and hopefully include info about which order(s) work well with - vocals, vs..guitar..vs...bass.. tracks.   Also If I am right, (not at home computer) the presets available, when loaded do not re-order the Fx, but will leave them whereever they are set at the time.

Thanks !

The included presets ( many of them not all )  do actually re-order the modules depending on the preset and catagory.  Most are starting points for the basic catagories. So far however, I hav'nt seen any of the presets that emulate this common vocal chain of the 1176 style comp to catch the peaks and then followed by the LA2A style opto to smooth the rest.
If so, we could try loading the presets to see if they would behave differently than simply inserting the desired module.

Well, certainly PC76, EQ and then PCLA work beautifully for vocals, IMHO.

I can only give my limited experience, and it can change depending on the source material.

For bass I often put Sat Knob first.  For guitar and vocals etc, I might put it later on.

I like putting PCLA last in a lot of cases.   If I use Concrete Limiter it will usually go last.

Sometimes I EQ before a comp if I thing a particular frequency will trigger it too much.

This is an interesting topic, but I'd need to spend some time thinking of good ideas, when I'm not so tired and after fewer glasses of wine.  With some luck someone more knowledgeable may chime in.

Some may just suggest just "Using your ears", which is fine, as far as it goes, but there are certain configurations that work in certain instances.

I'll have a look at some of my general practices, and post back later.  Sorry to be vague.

I'm still interested to see if anyone else has noticed the odd behavior that the OP mentioned.

Excelant thread. I haven't noticed any issues with PC and the order of the modules. I do reorder from the default some times. None the less, I think this thread needs the forum to take this idea seriously and look into it.

Hallo, John, glad you're here.  I've always respected your views, and it was on your "Recommendation" that I got the CL

I too think this is an excellent thread, but am worried about hijacking the OP which was problems with LA2A when using modules in a particular order.

Thanks jb101,
The only module we have experienced this on is the PC2A...none of the modules seem to behave irractically regardless of the order.
