  • I can't copy & paste automation on instrument track!?

Hi,
I have written a 2 bar bass loop and added automation to affect the cutoff knob on a low pass filter in the FX bin. I want this to now span the entire length of the song. I tried looping the midi sequence and stretching it out but it only stretches out the clip, the automation line doesn't copy. so then I decided to just select the clip (with the 'select track automation with clip' option ticked) and copy & paste it just after the original clip. Didn't work, So I held ctrl and dragged it, but again no automation was copied.

What am I doing wrong here?? I don't understand why this is so difficult to achieve or certainly not as obvious as it should be to do right!

Thanks for any help

In cubase I used to alt drag automation to copy it.

Have you tried control drag a selection to copy it?

Afaik, automation doesn't work the same with midi clips as it does with audio. I.e. you'd have to bounce the inst track to audio, redo automation, and manipulate from there. Hopefully, someone will chime in if there is a way.

The more I thought about it, I remember it wasn't automation but pitch bend cc's in midi that I was alt-dragging. I've did this thing where a plugin like analyzer writes automation. Then you export it as midi then change it with some tools then import it back in. That was in cubase though, should be something like that in sonar maybe.

I think the OP will need to split the instrument track into MIDI and audio tracks in order copy automation.

I think the OP will need to split the instrument track into MIDI and audio tracks in order copy automation.

That's probably the issue b/c I never have problems copying automation (that is not connected to a synth) w/ midi tracks.

Honestly, I've yet to really understand the real benefits of simple instrument tracks.

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, I'm not automating midi, I'm just automating the cutoff knob on a VST filter that is in the tracks FX bin. I am however using an instrument track that is not split (into audio and midi). I'm sure this has worked before but I had another go at it last night and no matter what I do, I can't get this to work and it is doing my head in. I can't continue with the track until this is sorted!

I may try splitting the track into audio and midi (I can't believe this is the only solution though). How would I do that, is there a quick way?

I am using Sylenth as the instrument, if that helps any..

I'm new but I would guess:

Just drag the midi to a midi track?

I always used midi tracks so I don't know about simple instrument tracks.

I make a simple instrument track for a midi track to sound.

May be the instrument doesn't need a track if you use a midi track?

Just have a new instrument but don't check anything?

But I've been using the instrument tracks to mix with...

I digress.

Yes I already posted the problem with this. Hey I'm up for any solution that takes less mouse clicks AND ENHANCES WORKFLOW- HINT! THAT IS NOT A WORKAROUND. I know to some people not into electroinc music automation is an after thought. I really don't care that you do not use it very much. I was not asking. Just Identifying it for the people that do. I wonder what that percentage is? Anyhow hope X2 remedies this. Obviously Daniel1 also sees this as an inconvienence.
