So now I'm not only a bit peeved that CW released a defective product, I'm peeved that it's infected a superior product with it's disease. AND i am quite surprised that CW would further risk it's reputation by continuing to market this junk.

If you simply want to get v8.53 installed and working properly, that can be accomplished in just a few minutes.

1.  Uninstall all versions of Sonar using "Programs and Features"
2.  Uninstall all Microsoft C++ redistributables using Programs and Features
2.  Manually delete all folders pertaining to Sonar
3.  Using the Registry Editor; go to HKLM>Software>Cakewalk Music Software and delete the Sonar keys.  Now, go to HKCU>Software>Cakewalk Music Software and delete the Sonar keys.
4.  Reinstall Sonar 8.5 and patch to version 8.53

Sonar v8.53 will now act just as it did...

10ten and Jrehanek if a bunch of us pitch in and pay you back each $99, will you both promise to never come here again and move on to another companies product?

What and lose some of the best comedy I've ever read?

There is really no right answer to this question.

It all depends on HOW you use the DAW and what features you use or don't use.

True, at this exact moment in time, X1 has it's problems but it has great potential.

It is kind of like asking which is better ...  a 12" ruler or a full 36" yardstick.

Depending on what you are measuring and how much free space you have to move around, there are times the smaller 12" ruler would be a better choice than a 36" yardstick.

From my perspective (which is only a personal opinion) ...... if your DAW is mostly used as a multitrack recorder and advanced editing tool, I think Sonar 8.0 is better from what I have seen.   Especially if you own and use lots of outboard high quality gear.

By contrast, if you don't already  have pro level preamps, channel strips and use your DAW as not just a recording tool ..... but a music composing and creation tool , it appears X1 may end up being the better option once they work out all the bugs.

But like a debate between which is better Porsche or Ferrari .........   it really comes down to personal preference more than anything else.

How selfish of me. Of course you are right.

@Middlemen

99 bucks isn't going to cover it at this point:
Purchase price $99
CD and shipping because CW wouldn't allow the program to download in the allotted 300 minutes: about 40 bucks
8 hours of lost tracking time: $240.00
8 hours dicking with Sonar to try to get it to work again: $240.00

So, I counter.  You can buy me out for $619.00

Of course, I've been busily making music with Sonar since Sonar 5, and I've lived through numerous iterations of the product.  Purchased every one, except seven, I think.  So say what you want, this forum is for helping people, it's also for complaining too.  What else am I supposed to do, kick my dog?  He bites!  But not as badly as X1.

@ Jim Roseberry

Thanks Jim.  Tracks were retained as they are during a system restore, so whatever screwed them up in x1 is still there: 8.5.3 just crashes now too when they are opened.

Old work is unaffected.  At this point the session is a loss.  I appreciate the help on getting Sonar working again.  I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Thanks again
John

I'm gonna have to agree with your statement, except:

8.5.3 was the best including x1, until I installed x1.  Now 8.5.3 is having issues as well.  I've uninstalled x1.  now every time i pull up the help file in 8.5.3 and run a help query, the audio slows down.  i have to go to the options/audio dialogue and click or unclick jut about anything and the audio goes back to normal.  Nudging casuses the same problem.  WTF Cakewalk?  it's not like you couldn;t have found a whole bunch of us to Beta test this piece of crap before you release it!

So now I'm not only a bit peeved that CW released a defective product, I'm peeved that it's infected a superior product with it's disease.  AND i am quite surprised that CW would further risk it's reputation by continuing to market this junk.

It's time to pull the product off the shelf, admit that it was a mistake to release it, and fix it.  I was just going to request a refund (sent that email this morning) now i'm wondering if i'll ever be able to use this program again!

You may have to re-install 8.5.3 from scratch...that worked for me.

Spot on Jim.

I did this last week and I'm now back in my "happy place" with 8.5.3

Looking forward to X1b in the hope of getting something stable with which to work. Sadly despite all efforts X1a is broken for me. While 8.3 and 8.5 continue to work well.

With previous versions it was me who always had the perfect sytsem that just ran fine (apart from acknowledged bugs) from the very first release. My turn to have a complete and utter failure. This is a first in about 15 years. Ces't la vie.
