• SONAR
  • SONARPDR.exe Still Running in Background

So, periodically, Sonar stops responding (usually as the result of a plugin not playing well with others) and I have to exit and relaunch the program. Usually, this does the trick and I'm up and running again in less than a minute. However, occasionally, SONARPDR.exe continues running in the background and, unless I reboot, I can't reopen Sonar for 5 to 10 minutes; i.e., until the executable stops.

Anyone know how to force the shutdown of the .exe? I've tried the following command line from the install directory (which has worked on other .exes), but to no avail:

taskkill /f /im "sonarpdr.exe"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Couldn't you just do that in Task Manager? Anyway that sounds super buggy. I'd ask tech support about that one even if just to let them know about the problem.

Unfortunately, no. I should have mentioned that. It no longer shows up on the Applications tab of Task Manager and when I highlight it and click End Process on the Processes tab nothing happens.

I'm no expert but something is seriously wrong there, man. Maybe a hardware issue? Virus? Registry problem? Hopefully someone here can help but this sounds like it needs a tech support ticket. In the meantime list your specs, hardware and anything you can think of you've done differently recently (installing new programs/plugs/anything) and maybe one of these super smart forum dudes can help you troubleshoot the problem. Good luck and sorry I could not be of more help. Cheers.

Hi Benjaminfrog,
This is frequently the result of a MIDI device (keyboard, interface or whatnot) keeping the Sonar process open.

M-Audio devices are frequent culprits for this...I had a USB Midisport interface for years that would do the same thing. Sadly, even unplugging the interface didn't work...the only solution for me was to reboot.

Thanks for your responses, Beepster. Although I'd love to find a solution, I'm not that concerned about there being something fundamentally wrong with my system. I don't have this issue with other programs and it's almost always related to a 3rd party plugin I've just clicked on.

That said my specs are as follows:

Win7 x64
2.8 GHz i7
12 GB RAM
80 GB Intel SSD (OS)
Various other internal and external HDs for audio, samples, etc.
RME Babyface

Let me know if there's other info that would be helpful. Thanks.

@razorwit... Oh man. That would drive me crazy. I'm thinking of getting an Axiom 25 too. Hope it doesn't pull that crap on me.

Ahhh... I've got an M-Audio Axiom 25. I wonder if that's it. I'll try killing that the next time it happens. Thanks, Dean!

Hi
If Sonar is not showing up in the Processes tab on Windows Task Manager I would agree there is something wrong here - possibly with the installation - have you tried a fresh install? - with crashes things can get corrupted sometimes

Mine's a 1st gen. Perhaps the 2nd gens are more reliable.
