I would love a customisable Snap Module (or a right-click option) that would let me save, say, three or four different snap options to a separate button for each.

When I'm comping audio, I'm continually swapping between 'Snap to Measure' and 'Snap to 1 Tick @ Nearest Audio Zero Crossing'.

I wonder if this new Smart Grid can accomodate this customisation, or will I be locked to whichever snap method I start with.

It should except for one detail (zero crossings are global). By holding down "N" you'll be able to pick an alternate setting (i.e. Snap to 1 Tick). But some options are global (zero crossings in this case). Basically if you look at the blog entry, everything in that Preferences config screen is global. But you can have two different configurations for settings on the snap module. And this includes landmarks.

Great stuff, and many thanks for explaining that Brandon.

It certainly looks like this cool feature is going to be a great help in improving my workflow...

Now please, take my money

Wow! I didn't understand that at all! Hopefully it will be clearer when I get hands on with it

I wonder, would something like a randomised snap option in PVR be useful to anyone? So for example, programming drums, you might not want it to snap 100% because that sounds too robotic. So an interesting feature (maybe enabled by holding down a key) would be to snap to grid, but add some degree of customisable random offset to make things feel a little more natural? If I'm looking to do this kind of thing normally, I'll just switch off snap and eyeball it for a bit of randomness, but maybe this idea could be developed into something really good? So kinda like simulating the effect you get from quantising stuff only to 50%, for example.

There is a great little plugin from Frank's Midi Plugins  that allows you to apply various amounts of randomness to a number of different parameters on midi tracks.  You may find it useful for your purpose.  I believe he has a free trial and it is not that expensive to purchase ($35-$40).

Use the site below as there are some others listing the same thing but look like scams or potential virus infectors.

this is possible with sonar's built in midi-plugins already

This does look pretty slick. However, it also reinforces my suspicion that I am no longer representative of Cakewalk's target market. According to the blog,

Snap grids are vitally important to almost every DAW user. In most cases, a user relies on the snap grid regularly throughout every session.

Sigh. Surely I am not the only surviving dinosaur who never uses grid snap?

If you don't use the metronome and play everything 'live and loose', then I can see why you wouldn't use it. But if you do anything to a tempo map, can't see why you wouldn't!
