A friend sent me a 340MB CWP file. Every time I try to open it in Sonar 8.5p X64, the program stops responding after expanding a couple of tracks. I can't even kill it from taskmgr or procexp64. I tried loading Sonar holding Ctrl-Shift (whats the correct key seq for no plugin load on startup?) and loading the file holding shift so I THINK I loaded it w/o plugins but it still crashes. I'm running S8.5p on a HP laptop w/4GB under Win7 x74 using an M-Audio USB Mobile Pre interface. Any ideas?

What version of Sonar was it created in? 

340MB seems large for a CWP file since CWPs only contain MIDI tracks and not audio tracks. Are you sure its not a CWB file or some other format? 

A good notion, Dave. 340 Mb means quite a bunch of MIDI-files.

In case it is a cwp-file after all, could the crashing be due to missing audio files that are being desperately looked for?

It would be useful to know something about the project and, as Dave mentioned, with what version of SONAR was it made.

I just checked, and the biggest cwp file I have is 5MB (an orchestral piece with 58 MIDI and audio tracks, 6 instances of Kontakt plus Omnisphere and SampleTank). To get a project file up to 340MB it would have to have a lot of unbounced V-Vocal and/or AudioSnap files in it. 

I'd have the friend send file project again, on the presumption that the cwp may be corrupt. Have him verify the file size.

It finally loaded when I started the load and went to dinner. There's nothing much to the file just a few audio tracks so I don't know why it took so long. The audio file drive is an external firewire drive but it's decently fast and the file wasn't that huge. Oh well...

I tried to reply last night but this forum was also acting strange. Wouldn't display in Firefox and in IE it would not bring up the reply dialog. Maintenence? Gremlins in my studio?

Use Chrome. Firefox used to be good, but now sucks and IE has always sucked. 

You have to be patient and gentle with the cwb-files. They are quite vulnerable, and when they get corrupt, there's little to do.

It's quite possible that if it was created in a different SONAR version, it's only the first time the loading is slow, and works OK from that on.

What works better is to create a project folder that contains the CWP and the associated Audio file.This is easy to move from computer to computer. Just make sure to date the folder clearly. There are too many complaints regarding bundle files. And yes Firefox 14 was the last straw for me,,, it has become terrible software for some dumb reason. Last good version was 3.

Unfortunately, Chrome has followed Firefox's lead and now sucks too. I use it on another laptop and while I like it it sometimes takes 5 minutes to initially load.

My wife's almost new, up to date lenova laptop all of a sudden stopped functioning on the internet, it took forever to open things. She was using FF 14, I tried Chrome and it still took forever to load pages, I dug out the IE 9 that came with it and now it's ticking along nice and perky on the net. Go figure. Why does technology even bother trying to advance??, seems everything from 2 years ago worked smoother.Windows 8 will inevitably screw us up for another year.
