  • Long Pause Before Playback?

Have any of you noticed this? I've been a longtime Cakewalk Pro Audio/Sonar user and only recently upgraded to X1. I've noticed that when you hit play, there's a long pause of maybe two seconds before the song actually plays. This seems to have nothing to do with audio latency; I'm able to listen to audio and play softsynths just fine. But this long pause seems kind of unnerving, I've never noticed it in any previous Cakewalk version.

And yes, I've unchecked the "Zero Controllers" and "Searchback" options in the settings.

Is this normal for X1?

I randomly get this sometimes but a simple reboot resolves this issue for me.

What sound card are you running?

How's your CPU going? Does this happen on a brand new track with say just one audio or midi clip and no effects (ie minimal computational needs)? What does your latency say you're getting? If you can play nicely in real time with direct monitoring, then sounds like your latency is good..

That is the symptoms of a poor driver. Have you upgraded them recently? The latest isn't always the greatest.

The latest drivers for my ZED-R16 have exactly the same problem for example. Rolling back a version or updating them will probably fix it.

Have you checked to see if you have the metronome volume is off but still have a measure of count in?

Brand spanking new system with an i& 3.6 GHz processor and 16GB RAM. CPU meter is at the lowest noticeable reading.
I can play nicely in real time with about 2.9ms of latency. Absolutely no problems with softsynths. Just the lag when I hit play.

el: just a shot in the dark here, but what do your setting look like in "Sync and Caching"?

Anything higher than 512 for me introduces a lag when I hit space bar. Are you at 1024 or higher by chance? That's the only time I've ever gotten a bit of lag. With really insane projects where there's lots of audio tracks, increasing I/O buffer sizes will drop the "hard disc" percentage. I always use 512 here but there have been a few times where 1024 was needed, thus there was a half a second lag before audio would start and stop. It's worth checking just to be sure. You should be fine with 256 or 512 in both of those boxes though. If it's higher than that, definitely try dropping it and your lag should go away. Hope this helps and you find out what it is. Good luck.

Mine are set default to 256.

Your reply sounded like the most logical explanation so I checked...and...

...nope. Had nothing to do with metronome. It was on count-off for recording only.

The lag only happens during playback; the stop/rew/ff commands are instantaneous.

Okay I figured out the cause of my playback pause!

On a whim, I changed my audio driver from the default WDM/KS to ASIO and did a Wave Profile...

BOOM! INSTANTANEOUS PLAYBACK!

I seem to have two Softsynth tracks in my project, both VSTis, so wonder if that is a factor. I haven't played anything back with straight audio tracks running under WDM/KS though.

Which type of audio driver is everyone here using, WDM or ASIO?

I kinda like how you can adjust the latency on WDM whereas it's more of a fixed deal with ASIO. But if ASIO is the way to go these days, then I gotta get used to it.
