Okay I figured out the cause of my playback pause!

On a whim, I changed my audio driver from the default WDM/KS to ASIO and did a Wave Profile...

BOOM! INSTANTANEOUS PLAYBACK!

I seem to have two Softsynth tracks in my project, both VSTis, so wonder if that is a factor. I haven't played anything back with straight audio tracks running under WDM/KS though.

Which type of audio driver is everyone here using, WDM or ASIO?

I kinda like how you can adjust the latency on WDM whereas it's more of a fixed deal with ASIO. But if ASIO is the way to go these days, then I gotta get used to it.

Thank God you sorted it out. :) You should be able to use WDM without a lag though. However, I cannot use WDM at all since I switched to Win 7. I prefer WDM due to running several sound cards which it allows me to use at once. ASIO only allows for 1. That said, I believe the majority here use ASIO as it does improve latency and other performance issues. I never had a problem with WDM or latency until Win 7 though. I could get down to 1.5 ms I believe it was with WDM and 0.7 with ASIO. That's the only difference on my end. But if ASIO works, that's really what you should be using as most soundcards today are built using those drivers. WDM is an older driver format...so if you make things work with ASIO, keeping it there would be your best bet in my opinion. Glad you found out what it was. :)

Ahem....post #4..

In my experience you'll find one of the driver modes works better than the other and that will vary from interface to interface.

I've used both at one time or another. The WDM driver for my current interface (ZED-R16) is virtually unusable, and as I said earlier the latest ASIO driver gives exactly the same symptoms, long pause before playback but other than that works perfectly.

At least you've got it running.......

But you were referring to driver versions as far as chronology :P Besides, one doesn't have the choice whether to install the WDM or ASIO driver for a particular sound interface -- they all get loaded at once.

I'm curious to know why the WDM driver is sticky though...but at this point is WDM obsolete technology anyway?

No true but the as far as I understand it WDM drivers are completely separate from the ASIO version, hence the "symptom of a poor driver" comment. Just your WDM driver is poor and the ASIO fine.

WDM isn't obsolete by any means. To start with if you want to run more than one device your only option is WDM, ASIO only allows for one driver to be used at a time.

WDM isn't good for me but there's plenty of people here using it and getting better results than they do from ASIO. It's just down to how good the drivers are.
