Nice tune and nice performance.
Actually it sounds like there is a pad behind the piano more than a reverb issue.
Break the song back down to the simplest elements and mix it flat with no EQ and no reverb.
When the mono mix sounds good start adding EQ so that everything has some clarity. The mix also needs a little width.
Layer in the pad and reverbs to give everything some space.
One last thing. Vocals almost always sound too quiet in headphones so volume-wise  think you're OK.
With space and more clarity the vocals will be clearer.

Dan- Thanks for lstening and for your comments. If you listened to my most recent mix then I guess I still have some work to do on the piano. I'm hoping that you listened to my old mix.

I listened to the link in your first post. If there was another one, it wasn't obvious to me...

Dan

That is a really good song!!  I could easily hear it on the radio.  Very modern sounding.  Have you tried to sell it?  You should.  It's that good.

Tim, Check your private messages. I liked you song, but it did need a bit of adjusting, so I downloaded it and played around with it in Ozone 5 and Alloy 2 and I think I have fixed it up pretty nicely on the mix. Contact me for the file. This is a great song and I enjoyed listening to it.

Peace and Blessings, John

I agree with some that the keys are a bit, well I don't know, maybe mid heavy?  Not my forte to do the freq crit.  I do think it's a nice song and I like your harmonies.

I like the song.

The piano sounds like it has the velocity near 127. There is no "feeling" in it. Having a touch sensitive piano keyboard would really help. It's definitely overpowering the vocals throughout much of the song.

Trying to get that balance between a piano and vox or guitar and vox is sometimes the hardest mix to do.

I think the vox needs to come up, piano should have some dynamics in it, and back off the reverb a bit.

Wookie- I appreciate the listen! Yes I totally agree it still isn't right. Thanks!

MGC59- Yep, I knew this is what I had to do after I listened to that second mix. You hit the nail on the head here.....there were several problems but the main problem was competing synth textures. Everyone is a little different in how they do things. In my case I usually try to hang on too long for fear of throwing out the entire mix I spent hours on. When something isn't working out after some time it's usually best to take it down to the basics and remix it. I am also learning that sometimes I need to spend just a bit more time on a mix before i make it public. I am sure glad we have a good community of people here willing to help someone out! Thanks for listening!

Dan- I think you probably had heard the most recent at the time. In that mix I simply changed a piano. In this mix I went back and reworked pretty much everything. Thanks for listening!

jude77- Wow...I had never considered doing that, thnaks so much for your comments!

John- I replied to your PM. Gotta give you kudos for  effort to help . Noone has ever done that before for me. I appreciate your efforts!! I want to hear what you have done with that mix when I get to a place I can hear it....I removed a lot of the trash that Ozone simply isn't designed to do.. Thanks brother for being so totally helpful.

Warren- Thanks for listening! I removed that piano and added another one and i gave it some stereo spread. Hopefully things are better( I believe they are). The changes I made should have made things sit better together in the mix.

Herb-Thanks for listening! I can always count on your professional and honest appraisal of music and i trust it.I have made some changes to the midi. I played the part in a little too aggressivly, so I thinned the midi velocities back some and went with a different piano. See if it sounds a little better now.

Just a quick FYI . This might help someone out.....The way I got a stereo effect on my piano sound is I loaded three instances of a piano into Kontakt. In this case it was the Sampletek White Grand piano. If you know about that piano, then you know that it lets you load pedal and harmonics into the total sound seperately or not at all into Kontakt. I loaded the central instrument and panned it center, then I took the pedal portion of that piano and panned it slightly left and one other harmonic subset and panned it slightly right. I panned these in the Kontakt rack, not Sonar. This lets you hear the bass notes primarily in the left channel and the higher notes in the right channel just like a real piano would sound if you were playing it.

I like the song a lot. Good melody, lyrics and overall composition. Good playing too. The reverb is too wet for my taste though.

I like the song Starise.  Subjective as it may be I thing the piano is split and panned too wide.  It may sound kinda that way to the person performing at the piano but the listener hears it more as one instrument.  some panning would be fine but in spots where there is no vocal going on there is also no middle here.  Just my thoughts on a 1st listen.  Nice track though!
