Learned years ago, never put your studio computer on line,
updates are rarely good(except from your DAW supplier)
download them to a key and transfer.
Make sure your antivirus program is on your download computer.
don't allow self maitenance programs,or antivirus to be resident on your studio computer.(these suck the life out of your computer)
no internet, explorer .....clean out all the BS startup garbage.
Now enjoy the no hassle enviroment.
Remember if it ain't broke don't fix it.

...... if you have the luxury of 2 PC's or laptops.

Some of us make do with what we have.

That said, I have NEVER had a problem being connected all the time. And most resident programmes nowadays have a small footprint. Its a moot point as to them "sucking life out of your computer" !

Each to his/her own

My wife experienced the same problem with her laptop. The configuring failed for three days before she told me what was going on. Simply, on Windows 7, go into system and security, check for Windows updates and manually install the updates one by one. It is time consuming, but it solved the problem. Everything downloaded and configured fine. You just have to do it one update at a time. I have no idea why.

I wasn't paying attention, but later realized my pc had been trying to update / failed / revert for a few days for these 6 updates. Updating it one by one solved the problem. Thanks!

This was the only time I've ever had any issue with my DAW being on the internet, and it seems to have gone away after a restart.

If you don't want or can't afford an extra off-line only machine then there's a simple policy that will keep you running smooth and sweetly.

Always have an OS drive image to fall back on that pre-dates the last monthly updates, Windows System restore doesn't cut it, save yourself the system overhead and turn it off and get a decent imaging solution you can initiate from an optical disk.  Set windows to notify rather than auto-install.  Install them when it suits you and revert to your previous OS image if any issues show up post install.

Simple, quick and effective.

Glad I could help. I never did understand what the problem was. I just stumbled onto the fix myself. I need to file this tidbit of info in what is left of my tired, old memory.LOL!

I just fired up a new system a few days ago and have been working under Win7 Pro 64-bit for the first time. Does SP1 help or hurt things?

No issue with SP1. Should also keep other drivers updated too (graphic, motherboard).

Mine has been acting a little odd the last few days. CLicking on automation in the master bus sometimes crashes the song...
