  • Fastest way to A/B-test?

Hi! Suppose to vote in a mastering competition. 14 tracks which I imported to Sonar. I want to quickly monitor the different tracks (A/B test) in order to make the comparison as meticulous as possible. Is there a faster way to switch between different tracks without using the mouse with mute or solo-buttons? Any keyvboard shortcuts?

You might look into "Control Groups" in X1 Help. With this you can set up so one click reverses the mute/unmute (and more) state of the a group of tracks with one click, while playing. I think it's limited to four tracks - but I've never really tried it. If you have Groove 3's "X1 Tip and Tricks" videos, check out Mix Trix/Control Groups. Good luck.

There is no faster way to A/B than using exclusive solo. Especially on a CS.

Thanks everyone. I found out on another forum: Make a group with track A and B. Solo one of them. Ctrl + klick on solo button will invert the settings. Works perfectly!

Why bother with all that?

John posted the perfect answer - use Exclusive Solo mode

Yeah dude, exclusive solo. Much, much easier.

You are aware of exclusive solo, yes? It's not like regular solo. It's exclusive.

I think the OP wants to toggle between track A and B - instantly.

I could be wrong but with Excl Solo you would need to un-solo track A and then solo track B which is not as instantaneous as one would like it to be.

EDIT: me thinks I need to look into this Exclusive Solo thingy then :)

Sorry John and Bristol, I studied a Youtube clip about that and I didn't fully understand it. I have now downloaded Groove 3's "X1 Tip and Tricks" (thnx kelsoz!) and hope to dwell into it soon. Anyhow, for my purposes the grouping and ctrl + click worked very well.

Exclusive solo will only solo ONE track at a time (generally). So if you have track A and track B and have exclusive solo turned on, you simply click 'Solo' on track A, and you hear track A. Then you simple click 'Solo' on track B and it will INSTANTLY and SIMULTANEOUSLY turn off the solo from track A and turn on the solo from track B. This results in the PERFECT A/B tool at the click of a button. I'm sure this is one of the big reasons this feature was added. There are other uses, of course.

Suggest you check out Dim Solo too if you are not already aware (if you are not aware of exclusive, it's unlikely you are aware of Dim Solo, as the features are located next to each other). Dim solo will turn down all tracks that are NOT soloed by a pre-determined amount (-6dB, -12dB and -18dB). Great for assessing the quality of a take while in the context of the music, without having to adjust the faders and screw with your balances. Also can be used to maybe make finer compressor (or other tools) adjustments whilst still in the context of the music and many other purposes.

These are great tools and I use them both regularly.
