  • My E drive seems to be taking naps even though I have power management off...

So anytime I walk away from my system or have just booted up it takes my E drive a few seconds to "wake up". I've done all the system optimization stuff so I figured this type of thing wouldn't be happening. Actually last night after I booted up and opened a project I got an audio engine stop once the track actually reached an event. Once the E drive spun up all was well. I'm recording my audio to the E drive (1TB Caviar Black 7200RPM) and I can actually hear it spinning whenever I go to do something after letting the system sit idle for a while. It's not a HUGE deal but I'd kind of like to have it ready to go at all times. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I have noticed this to a degree. I think its in the drive as a way to keep heat under control and to lengthen lifetime. I have 5 HDs on my system plus 2 removable ones in 2 drives bays(system drive is one of those). So often there is a delay in opening up a drive's folder. Sometimes its Windows doing an index.

You don't turn off indexing???

Well if it's normal I can live with it. When I get going on the recording stuff my mind starts moving so fast that second or so seems like forever but aside from that one engine stop (which really was insignificant) it hasn't caused any issues. Just thought I'd see what you guys had to say on the matter. Cheers.

Yeah John, I read somewhere we should not use it (and it must be true if it was on the internet) but it would be nice if it expedited searches substantially and didn't cause issues elsewhere.

Open your drive properties, enable ready boost, max setting ,this will give you a 4gb cache, and will also leave your drive in use always.gives a nice preformance boost also.

I have had no reason to turn it off. Further, I search my drives often enough that its useful if I want to find something quickly.

Its quick and unobtrusive. So why turn it off?

I do video and audio and have never found it to be a problem.

I don't allow anything to access the net automatically though including Windows. I do find that intrusive.

@Gary... Thanks, man. I may have already done that when I optimized but I'll double check. It's just a little annoying having such a high powered system getting slowed down by something so simple. Cheers.

And what is this Indexing you guys are talking about?

Windows keeps track of your files for searching. It looks into them and at them to find things it can tag for a search.

It does this at times to update its index.  In the past before Vista Windows did this but very badly. It often could find anything or index well. After MS brought Vista they changed the file indexing completely both for speed and accuracy.

Keep in mind that if you have a file but can't find it it might as well be lost. With mega hds out its more important than ever to be able to search them and find a file quickly.

I would go to MS and read up on indexing.
