Does anyone know if X1 has the capability to convert MIDI to musical notation? If so, please tell me how.

yes, you play/record a midi track,  then view it in staff view.  You will see notation.     Be warned:   notation editing is lacking in features and can be used as a sketch at best.

  I remember in 1992, Emagic (C-lab back then) Notator on the Atari, playing in MIDI and seeing notation leap onto the screen.  I thought the pinnacle of sequencing had been reached - this was truly a miracle.  But that was 20 years ago, and the Staff View still isn't there.

I think that's what my friend had on his Atari. I'll never forget a jam session we had with me on a MIDI guitar (which was actually quite good for the time), and at the end of it seeing what I'd improvised in notation on the screen. And from what I remember, it was pretty good. Anyway it was a boon to someone like me who had previously only used OctaMED on the Amiga.

Wow! Sorry to to go off topic for a moment, but I used to use OctaMED (and before that MED) on the Amiga too! I've still got my Amiga, tucked away in the loft... I should get it out one day, but, then again... perhaps not.


I also had the A.M.A.S sampler hardware/software/MIDI interface.

Yes like Jimbo said - anything you record in MIDI can be viewed as notation in the Staff View. And like he said, you can only use it as basic reference. Having said that, Sonar is not a notation software after all.

But if you save your file as *.mid you can then load it in this software - http://musescore.org/

It's not anything like Sibelius or Finale, but it's free and with some time and dedication, you can print out professionally looking scores.

The Roland SynthAxe, 303 and numerous others. The Ztar. The Stepp. Ibanez IMC 1. Then the PitchRider which retrofit any guitar and made it MIDI capable. Then the Roland GK-2 as part of the GR-50 package which could also retrofit any guitar and made it MIDI capable which is the foundation of all their newer gtr synth systems. Just off the top of my head, there were many more. Of course this encompasses both MIDI guitars and guitar-like controllers.
 
For what it's worth I use a GK-2 MIDI pickup on my Charvel/Jackson.

Or open an existing midi file, select it and open the Staff View :-)

you can also import a mid file and then view it in staff view. 

While there is a print function, and it does a WYSIWYG kinda thing.... it would be better to use a purpose built scoring program if printing is really what you want to do.
