  • Massive frustrations trying to snap NI Drummer clips to bars

A reminder: I'm currently trialing X1.

It just seems like snapping is random and temperamental. I have it set to "snap to," magnetic is off, and the increment is set to "whole."

When dragging grooves from NI Drummer kits into a track, they only line up on the bar when they feel like it. More often than not, it's a few ticks out (like 9 ticks, or 17 or something). If I randomly drag and snap the clip around, eventually it will snap to a bar. But I really have to fiddle to get it to work. Sometimes, I'll click on a clip that's perfectly lined up, and the mere act of doing that will offset it by a few random ticks, so I have to snap it around again before it sits.

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, and the temperamental nature of it (i.e. action X will sometimes lead to result Y and sometimes to result Z) leads me to think that it's a bug. Let's face it, what I'm trying to do here is pretty basic DAW stuff and should work as advertised.

Which leads me onto my next question: does anyone know if X1 updates were applied to the trial version? Or am I currently trialing the first build of X1, which was apparently full of bugs and everyone complained about? I'd like to know that if I buy this thing, I'm not going to be having the same issues. It's really starting to worry me because dammit I otherwise love this DAW!

As far as the trial version is concerned, I can't answer you. But one thing I can assure you and I would put my neck on the block for it - The full version of Sonar X1 (especially after updates, bug fixes and whatnot), works perfectly fine. What you're experiencing is very odd though. Does this happen only when you try to snap NI Drummer clips?

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be confined to NI Drummer. I just tried it out with some Groove Monkee MIDI, dragging it across from the browser. I dropped one in at 34:01:000. Then I moved it to the next bar. It "snapped" to 35:01:044. Now if I move it back and forth it snaps in at a 44 tick offset each time. If I keep moving it along bar by bar, eventually it snaps in at 000 ticks. Something is definitely amiss.

I'm really sorry - no idea. Even though I'm new on this forum, I've been using Sonar for the past 8 years or so and never came across this problem. I'll look it up and if I find something useful I'll let you know. Sorry I know how frustrating such a silly thing can be :/

I used to have the same problem. Here's what worked for me. Go to "Preferences/Snap-Nudge. Set your strength to maximum. Also set "Move to" not "move by". Then in the workspace make sure the blue snap button is highlighted and set what increment you want. Ever since I've used these settings I've never had a problem. Hope this helps.

If by "strength" you mean magnetic strength, then I have that off since every opinion I've read seems to be adamant that magnetic strength causes more problems than it's worth. I just tried it anyway, and it doesn't make any difference to the problem I'm having. Like I said in my OP, I have it set to "move to" anyway. The snap button is, of course, turned on.

Check to see where the first Midi note appears in the clip. Sonar doesn't care where the note events are, so if your clip boundaries do not contain any note data, the note data will itself not line up to the grid.

If this is the case, right click the clip and select "Apply Trimming" to remove any empty space.

It's not the first MIDI note in the clip that's not lining up, it's the clip boundary itself, i.e. the start figure that's showing in the clip inspector is showing a few ticks off. I'm presuming that figure is the actual start of the clip and not the first note. Besides, that wouldn't explain how the clip eventually snaps onto the bar when I move it around a bit.
