I use Band in a Box. The fiddle sounds good BUT.... you can not tell it what to play like you can and do with EW or any other Midi based synth.

I used it here>>>   http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=443134&songID=11615875  it comes in somewhere around 30 seconds into the song. Again at 1:28.

To get the fiddle you need to buy into the higher levels for the real tracks..... but short of a buddy who plays fiddle, BB is the next best thing.

You can contact Scotty here in the forums..... look him up, he sure plays one mean fiddle and he has been know to contribute to a project now and then. He could play the part exactly like it's needed.

The Cakewalk TTS-1 has a fiddle patch. Its not great, but like all synthesizer or sampled emulations of instruments, how realistic it sounds depends more on how you play it than the sample being played. Fiddle players use a lot of doublestops (2 notes played at the same time a 4th apart), grace notes, spiccato, bow bouncing, and slides because it is a fretless instrument. It also helps if you use a synth keyboard to play the parts so you can use the pitchbend wheel and the modulation wheel to make it sound more real. Just entering notes into the piano roll view or the staff view is not going to yield good results. If you're not a fiddle player, do some research on the web on fiddle techniques.

This could be a little bit off the wall, but A|A|S have a physical modelling synth called String Studio. There isn't a Fiddle preset as such, but you may be able to tweak an existing preset and get near a fiddle sound. I have to admit that I haven't really used the synth that much myself yet.

You can download a trial version, and because it is not sample based, and uses physical modelling, you can download it in no time.
