Wow, thanks for all the info everyone! That Cakewalk computer info page is really helpful. As the cost of a suitable laptop is in the $2k range, I'm leaning toward just buying Windows 7 64 bit and sticking with the desktop for the time being. I also need to factor in the cost to upgrade to X1 from 8.5; not sure how much that is. The Firebox has a Windows 7 driver, but I do need to make sure it's 64 bit compatible. I'm sure I'll be hitting the group again for some more help before long, but thanks for now!

Keep in mind X1 is on its way out the door. X2 will be coming soon so factor that into your decision. There have been a few threads announcing it's arrival. Not sure what the upgrade path difference will be between 8.5 and X1 vs X2 but it would certainly be something to look into. Cheers and good luck.

depends on you as a person, I mean if you get the x1 you'll maybe get the x2 upgrade = x1 due to it being out longer = less problematic... so you might wanna start with that or just go to x2


also the thing with what vst's your currently using and if they are 64 bit ready dues come into it.

when certain folk changed from 8 to x1, well .. they weren't exactly happy about it due to the UI change, maybe some aren't still.. who knows.. so be aware there is a bit of learning curve / change
