I just picked up X1 Essential and am totally new to the PC recording world.
 
I have a Line 6 UX1 for an audio interface. Does anyone here have any experience with this and Pod Farm on X1 Essential?
 
Also, can I install my X1 on more than one PC? I'd like to have it on both my desktop and my laptop.
 
ALso are their any good video tutorials? Like from the ground up, step by step for beginners.
 
I apprecaite any info anyone can share. tips, tricks.

Welcome to the Sonar forum. 

You might want to take some time to read the Getting Started Guide and the many chapters of information in the Help Menu. 

You can install Sonar on more than one PC as long as you only use it on one at a time. 

There are video tutorials on the Cakewalk website (Cake TV and Sonar University) and YouTube. X1 Essentials is like the other products in the line (Studio and Producer) except with less features. However, the basics are the same.

As Dave has already said, there is plenty of stuff on the Cakewalk site and on youtube, you just need to dig around a bit. There is plenty of free stuff, but you may need to part with a bit of cash every now and then.

The online help, and the offline reference guide that both come with Sonar are excellent starting points, if you don't mind a bit of reading.

And then there is a wealth of info here on this forum, just ask away.

One thing I should say, is it would be great to know more about your audio workstation (PC) amongst other things.

As far as Sonar is concerned, even a cut down Essential, there is so much to learn, before you even start to record note.

As far as my system, it is an HP desktop with an Intel Core 2 Quad core Q9400 @ 2.66Ghz running 64-bit Vista Home Premium. 5 GB RAM,  with over 200 GB free hard drive space. Nvidia GeForce 9300 GE

I will have to get downto some reading and wander the videos. I had already looked at a couple on youtube but they start off already further in than I am. I am hoping for a basic "here is the beginning screen" and step by baby step from there.

That is why I have taken so long to get into this, becasue I know there is going to be a steep learning curve until I can competently navigate and lay down tracks.

I have a long distance friend who is using this software and once I get upi to speed, we will compose/record sending tracks back and forth to eachother.  We want to be able to send/receive tracks and open them in X1 and then add to what the other has done.

Yeah, well one step at a time man... take it easy, and it will come to you. You don't have to be diving into the deep end and getting into trouble.

Tell me, what sort of stuff are you doing? The reason I ask is that there are so many ways of making music nowadays.

Are you "real" instruments person? That is, will you be recording mainly audio tracks in Sonar? Guitar, bass, drums, keys etc?

Or will you create music using the many available soft synths?

I did some homework though, and if you've got a UX1 then you'll be recording guitars and probably vocals? And for drums you may use soft synths like Studio Instruments Drums perhaps?

I'm just trying to get an idea of where to start helping you.

I'm off to bed now though, I'm in the UK and I'm up early for work tomorrow.

Yes, I will be recording guitar/bass tracks and then my friend will likely put down the drum tracks later. He is more adept at this program.

I just need to get up to speed to be able to lay my tracks down. I'm not in a hurry to get this down.

welcome.... 200gb... I'd look another drive for storage.... you'll burn thorough that quick once you get the bug and the hang of recording.
