Is there a way to add a volume envelope to just one clip and not the whole track?    In my previous DAW I would just split a track then add an envelope only to the spit section, partly just to keep the envelope clutter down.
 
I really wish I could just right click on a clip and select "volume envelope".  Is it possible to customize a hotkey for adding a volume envelope?  
I'm new to Sonar, and I hope it's just a learning curve issue, but I'm feeling like Sonar needs to keep the basic, most used editing functions extreemly quick and easy to use.   

I assume there are clip envelopes in X1. I don't have X1, so I'm only guessing.
What does the Help file say when you look for clip envelopes? It only takes a minute to look instead of hours here on the forum.

I've just had a look myself, and I cannot find any way to add automation of any kind to individual audio clips.

Make sure you can see the Edit Filter. Select Clip Automation from its drop down menu and than pan or gain. A clip envelope will be created. 

You need a clip gain envelope

This is what I am trying but it puts an envelope on the entire song.  I only want it on a short clip.  Is this possible?

I wish ^this was true, At least the play/stop button was easy enough to find :)

Yes, the automation envelope is created on every clip on the track, but you can tweak each clip's gain amount independently.
