Hi,

I'm a proud owner of a new and shiny Sonar X1 Producer (updated to X1d), courtesy of the upgrade campaign last month. Whee :)

Is the Step Record function the only way to input notes notes from a MIDI keyboard? That is, if I'm in the Piano Roll View, why can't I just click on a point in the PRV, press a key on my controller and have a note appear there? It seems to me that if I just want to add a couple of notes, having to start up step record or trying to figure out the right rows for clicking with the mouse is unnecessarily hard.

Also, does anyone have any handy tips for Step Record or other non-realtime MIDI input methods? :)

Now then, each to their own as they say, but if you are clicking in the PRV anyway, why don't you just draw the note, instead of using your controller?

The only time I use my MIDI keyboard is when I am recording in real time. And I have never used step recording, so, I'm sorry that I can't really help in that department.

Most people with a midi keyboard just PLAY it and record the midi that way.

I mean, I'm sure I can get proficient with Step Record, given enough practice. It just feels that compared to the ease of note input in e.g. Sibelius or Renoise, it's just a bit unpolished in Sonar. And if my memory is right, it used to be easier in pre-Sonar Cakewalk products (which is the last time I've owned one before this).

You can easily add notes and delete them and move them with the Smart Tool in the PRV.

Yeah, it works just fine. I'm just a crappy keyboard player, so I prefer non-realtime input.

If you haven't mastered the Smart Tool I would do that first before learning anything else. It really makes things fast.
 
You can play the keyboard to get the part close and then use the Smart tool in PRV to edit it. That's what I do.

Well, I'm no Rick Wakeman myself, but I still find real time input, followed by a bit of quantize or manual tweaking, is much easier than Step Record. But that's just my opinion. If I were you, I would seriously consider working either in Staff view or on the PRV, with the draw tool and stuff...

Right. Guess I'd better learn to play better and learn to use the Smart Tool better. (Too many 'betters' in that sentence..)

Just learn the Smart Tool and you'll be fine.

Actually, you can enter notes without even using the ST by double clicking anywhere in the PRV, or use Alt + Enter
