Hi Jonesey,

I am pretty sure that if you a creating an automation envelope that controls, say, the cut off frequency value of a filter, for instance, then that envelope will be on the MIDI track, seeing as it is MIDI data that is being sent.

If a Simple Instrument track is being used, then yes, the automation envelope will be drawn onto that one track, and when the synth is frozen, the automation will be applied to the audio that is created for that track.

And there is Clip Automation and Track Automation. I used to do this quite a bit, when I was last active and using Sonar 6. I am slowly getting back up to speed as the weeks pass by, but I am still somewhat short of where I used to be six years ago...

I'm at work at the moment, and I can only refer to the reference guide, so I will double check on this later.

cheers

I thought that through the Synth Rack you could choose which track to "host" a synth's automation?

Thanks for that Steve, I will look into it later...

FWIW, I've just been playing with this.

Steve, you are correct, you can select which track is to contain a synth's automation from the Synth Rack. So, if you wish, you can keep your automation envelopes separate from the MIDI note clips, if you so desire.

I was hoping to be able to create a track for each of the synth parameters that I would ike to automate, but you do not appear to be able to do this, as when you select a new track from the drop down selection thing, what ever automation is contained on the previous track moves onto the newly selected track, and you cannot separate them.

Not to worry, at least I know I can keep the automation envelopes separate from the MIDI clips. I just need to be sure that this gives me some kind of an advantage... it's just a hunch of mine and I will carry on with my experimentation in this area.

@ Jonesey - As far as I can make out, the only automation envelopes that can be created on Audio tracks are those that you would expect to effect an audio clip, and that is Pan and Volume, and also (and I have only just found this out tonight) the various parameters that are tweakable within the ProChannel modules.

Andy, in addition to those you mention, the track will also display any envelopes written to control Plugins in the Fx bin

If you insert e.g. a delay, then select the edit filer > Automation, you'll see all the controls that the plug exposes for automation

Yeah, I noticed that Jonesey, thanks :)

I've never tried that before, in Sonar, that is, tweaking the effects parameters through a song.

Many years ago, I used to have an Electroharmonix Memory Man, and you could get some real strange effects from that by tweaking the delay parameter. I wondering if you could do the same with some of the delays on offer in Sonar, or GR5... I can see another experiment coming on... One day, I'm in danger of perhaps getting down to making some music lol.
