it never seems to amaze me how one spends 400+dollars on a ditital audio workstation but yet forgets the most important part, the soundcard, not the onboard card, thats for computer assigments, media player, listening to videos on the web, exc.
a soundcard is the engine.
Well I just don't really want to spend more money on an audio interface when I've already spent £100 on my E-MU.
Actually on this topic, would a MIDI merge box be able to withstand the power of the E-MU and the Korg Microkey?

this is the problem though.... I am having to switch back to the computer soundcard each time I need to use a soft synth because the E-MU doesn't have MIDI support i.e. no USB ports.

The USB midi ports are on your PC, not on the soundcard.  You shouldn't switch devices.  Make sure you have the Korg midi driver installed and configured properly. If it is installed, Sonar will see it in MIDI preferences. I have 2 Korg devices that work through USB on my PC while the audio is handled through the  M-Audio.

Next - please, slow down.  When you are responding you seem to do one thing, and then throw in another - - i. e. - if you have a simple instrument track you don't need additional midi or audio tracks. It just makes it hard to figure out what you are really doing!

Ok, it looks like I cannot do this then if it is a bad idea to keep switching soundcards. The problem is most likely due to a corrupt driver like chuckebaby suggested.
In that case, is there a way to connect the E-MU 0204 and Korg Microkey to the computer at the same time without the computer crashing?

The two (E-MU 0204 and Korg Microkey) should work exclusively to each other. The Korg should do nothing but send midi note (possibly some other things) commands to Sonar (or any program that accepts midi) and the EMU should do nothing but do digital audio conversion.  Each has its own driver, and each work independently of the other.

Try reinstalling the Korg driver.
As far as Sonar goes, the tried and true method for midi to audio is easy:
Insert a soft synth, and have the soft synth dialog create a seperate midi track.
In the midi track, the midi output should already be set to the synth - and input should be set to omni. (Make sure the Korg is transmitting on MIDI channel 1) Also make sure the synth's track is putting out to a hot master or output.
That really should be all there is to it.  The Korg will make midi notes on the midi track and the synth will take the output and turn it into audio through your sound card (Audio device)

So you are saying the computer shouldn't crash?

Yes. I am saying the computer shouldn't crash. FYI - many hard crashes are caused by drivers.  Perhaps you should uninstall both and start over.
