  • Setting up the metronome for multiple/fluctuating tempos in a project?

Hi, guys. Hope you are all having a nice weekend.

So I've started working on laying down bed tracks for my old traditional folk music band and I have a question in regards to the metronome. I've managed to get the hang of playing along with it and it is working out quite well however some of these tunes require multiple tempos. I'm not quite sure how to do that so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction by either providing some tips here or letting me know of any resources within the manual or elsewhere that would explain the process. There are three scenarios I will need this for.

1) Using a starting tempo for a section then increasing it with each new cycle of the song. eg: First 12 bars 80 BPM, second 12 bars 100 BPM, third 12 bars 120 BPM and so on.

2) Increasing the tempo gradually over the course of a section or song. eg: Start point is 80 BPM then tempo increases steadily to 140 BPM at the end. (Think like an old traditional Greek style dance)

3) Combining both of these. eg: Start at 80 BPM with a gradual increase over 12 bars to 100 BPM then holding at 100 BPM for 12 bars then again increasing tempo over 12 bars to 120 BPM.

I'd also be interested in "free form" tempo swells and drops like you'd hear at the end flourish of a rock song as I think it's going to be difficult to duplicate that properly with a straight tempo clicking away in my ear.

Any advice would be appreciated and thank you in advance. Cheers!

How ya' doing Beepster?

Take a look at the tempo view. You can use the draw tools to draw in increases at the snap resolution or enter them manually. Alt+Shift+5 or selecting it from the main menu--->views will open that.

Individual tempo changes or a series of tempo changes can be inserted via the "Project" menu in the main menu.

The metronome will follow the tempo changes.

Of course you could always record without a metronome and then extract the tempo(s) after the event. See this video on how to do that.

Beep, go to view/tempo and draw in whatever changes you want...it's a very precise way of doing what you need to do here.

@FBB... Hey, buddy. I've been a little stressed lately trying to find a place to live but otherwise things are alright. Thanks for all that advice. I've never really played around with click tracks before because I've usually played against live beds. Now however I'll be the starting point of all projects which will then get sent of to the drummers so definitely gotta learn this stuff. The guy these particular tracks will be sent to is pure pro so I gotta make it right lest I look like a hack. Pretty excited to actually be doing something useful with X1 after all the false starts and the massive learning curve. I actually have a stockpile of questions at the moment about various things because I haven't been on the forum much lately. You'll probably see a few more Beepster queries in the next couple of weeks now that I'm getting down to work. I hope you've been well. Cheers.

@Randy... Heheh. He does that quite a bit doesn't he. Thanks though and I hope everything is awesome in your world as well.
