@Neole: I was having a similar issue. Contacted cakewalk and a tech and myself walked thru what I thought was the issue. And he ended up telling me the samething jim is telling you. Its not sonar.

I didnt believe him. But My setup was to the point where sonar wouldnt launch anymore, but the exe would run for a bit in background (task manager). Now Im no sonar exp. (Im a convert from logic, which was very stable, but that is due to apple making the OS and the application.)

Now I solved this, one: by going down to 32-bit (which may or may not be an option for you) And I reinstalled win7.......and this is after reinstalling sonar 10x(which didnt work at all).....and it works fine now....I think its the way win7 is talking to sonar that is the issue.
Yes I think going back to 32 bit might be the answer but I dont want to since now I want to stay up to date on technology! I guess i will live with the couple of minutes of waiting till something's sorted out. Till then I will try jim's suggestions.

I work with a friend who works on logic and everytime he shows me a new trick I find myself telling him Ive been doing that on sonar for ages.

Couple of features on logic I like that are not on sonar -

1 - set markers according to video scene changes AUTOMATICALLY
2 - find apple loops by key tempo genre mood etc (sonar should do this for ACID loops)

X1 is very stable in any version.

What you describe appears to me to be a hardware issue. I would take Jim's advice and thoroughly test you memory. A driver could cause those issues as well.

Sonar is not unstable and has never been unstable.

What might help is a listing of your system in detail including graphics card, memory modules, CPU as well as your audio card. Any MIDI gear connected too. In other words the complete system as it is setup for audio.

Im guessing its your interface, power it off next time sonar crashes. My projectmix use to crash sonar all the time, not that m-audio would admit it POS..........

I'm using a new i7 laptop, along with a Roland QUAD-CAPTURE audio interface. The i7 laptop is pretty much Intel throughout, which is what is recommended. I've been watching all the topics here regarding the instability with X1, and I have to agree that, X1, is indeed unstable, compared to the other versions I have used (an unfair comparison, I admit, because I was using different plug-ins back then, and it was on a different system).

Having said that, and here's the rub, it is virtually impossible to determine what is causing Sonar to crash so much. It could be my hardware, or my software, or the operating system setup. But what ever it is, I too find that it can take quite a while for the Sonar executable to truly close down, and it is sometimes quicker to shut down and start up again.

On the positive side, so far at least, non of my current projects have been corrupted by the crashes, so as long as I save regular, I'm willing to accept that Sonar will crash from time to time...
