Noisy Neighbour
I haven't been around here fore some time, so I thought the first thing I wanna listen to should be something well performed, produced and inspiring. I made the right choice to pick this one !
I don't have the energy to go into some deep analysis at the moment... all I can say is that I really enjoyed this.

Thanx!

Regards,

thanks for the suggestion on the kick...
it seems that on some playback systems it is too much, on others, not enough.
i'm trying to figure out where it PEAKS, take that down a bit on a narrow Q, and lift the whole thing back up a bit.

thanks for the kudo on the wah.
it was my very first 'effect' that i learned to use,
copying jeff beck and hendrix...
appreciate the listen

The kick sound and in fact a lot of the bass end is too woofy and deep. If ARC was so good it should have told you that immediately. Actually just checked again on my main monitors and not too bad overall but the kick is a little thumpy or something. I felt the snare was getting slightly lost too. Bass is too loud like most people do.

jeff,
i don't think it has anything to do with 'arc'

i think the kick being strong, and the bass too, to a certain extent, is just a subjective call.
i like em like that, on this one song.

i'll play with the mix again, and re-consider the levels.

you are the first one that has had a complaint about the low end....
out of approximately 30 reviews i've had in total...

Yeah bats thanks for that. I went back and checked it out again on my small Auratone type speaker. I have got one of these and I feed an L+R signal to the speaker and check things way down low in volume. THIS is one of the ultimate ways of checking mixes. No ARC or anything required. Does not matter how your room sounds. The small speaker does not involve the room so it does not matter.

There were a few aspects of your mix that failed in the small speaker.

Kick sounded weak in the small speaker and that is because there is too much thump energy on larger systems but no real sound on the little speaker. It means the kick is lacking in upper tones and top end.

Snare and drums in general sounded a bit back.

Guitars too loud in general. Lead guitars overpowering everything else. Even the rhythm guitars too loud at times. Sounds like a guitarist mixed this!

Bass too loud as well on the little speaker.

I know that bass levels are a matter of taste and I appreciate that. I would drop it back a tad and bring it back into line. What happens when you do this is the rest of the spectrum starts to speak louder just naturally. Then your guitars might even be louder but you can then pull them down a tad too and push a few other things in there such as the drums and get that kick being a little more clear.

Look all just opinions of course as I know mixing is very subjective. I find though when I get everything right on the small speaker, my main monitors are just perfect and the mix is perfect everywhere else. Interesting don't you think. Cheaper and better than ARC IMO. It is such a simple little thing the small speaker but hardly anyone does it. Many great engineers all use to do it in the past.

It is a bit like VU meters we had them before but for some reason they are gone now. And for your interest the mix does not fair well on my VU's either and that is a bit of a bad sign. They are swinging wildly in parts, they drop down too low and go over a lot regularly. Means you are not controlling the dynamics properly yet for my liking on tracks and in the overall master. (BTW is it mastered yet because that could settle the VU's down a fair bit if it's not) They are not dancing well to the music (ballistics)

Sorry for being so picky. Music is great though! You are a great musician!

appreciate the listen and review...
you know, when i'm working on one or two of my own, i tend to 'knuckle down' and find that i can't listen to other stuff until i get my own out of the way.
that's kinda the mode i'm in now, after a fair dry spell of too much work, not enough music...
other times, i can just take my time listening to others stuff, and listen to enjoy, not so much engineering/mixing and all that stuff..
i'll come around to more listening/reviews soon....

hey man, thanks for the kudos, but i've got way too far to go to feel jealous, even in jest!
LOL

thanks for listening, sorry about your chop problems.
i get that with internet streaming, our dsl is pitiful, thinking about dropping it for comcast (grr)
it IS available as a download, that always sounds and plays better...

i think your assessment of the bass/low end is in line with Jeff's, so i'll definitely be taking another pass at the mix.
i was really focused on the drums only, now i should go back and get a good one.

hey man, don't stay away so long!

I don't need to say it's a ridiculous piece of songwriting and guitar wizardship.  The drum sound is stupendous.  Me=jealous.

That basically sums it up.  Awesome!

Bat, I listened on my Auratones 5C's (circa 1979) and did not hear the issues that Jeff brought up.  Of course the bottom decreases on my 5C's, but that is only to be expected.  The difference between the 5C's and my active speakers are minimal.  As you say, some decisions are subjective, and I like your choices in this tune.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to hear the second mix as the link didn't work for me.  If you mixed this using the ARC system, you're beginning to make a believer out of me, not that it explains your extraordinary musicianship.

whoa, i thought this thread was LONG gone!
LOL
thanks for continuing to review this one folks..

well, thanks for that. that kit is a combination of several pieces, but mostly the new york avatar kit.

nice to hear someone using the horrortones.

i had access to a pair back in the mid 80's, i always appreciated what they showed me.
too many hyped monitors, can give false impressions.
the arc just helps me overcome issues in my room that i have not been able to correct for.
i'm still learning how to use it with my system.
i need to do another full round of readings, and move the monitors around a bit.
but thanks for the kind words.

That's it....I'm not commenting on your tunes anymore!!! I'm starting to feel like a fan Boi. Awesome just awesome all the way around. So if you don't see feedback from me, know that I listened to whatever you posted and enjoyed it immensely.
