I have used the Flux BitterSweet 3 – Audio Transient Manager before on drums and it did the trick.
I also have used the Voxengo Stereo Touch and it did what I needed it to do!

There are a lot of viable and worthy FREE plugins...so many in fact,
that we really don't need to buy any when you consider that most of the
needs for mixing are in the package with just about any DAW, and the
number, and quality, of the free ones out there as well.

I think we continuously look for the illusive "magic" plugin...

The real magic is in a million dollar mixing console and the 
outboard hardware.  THAT's why they'll NEVER put that "into the
Publics hands" for $149....But they are making some nice plugins.
