See I love Aretha's voice, but I have to admit I find that one-chord soul groove kinda boring unless someone's blowing over the top of it. I definitely prefer something with a bit more harmonic interest.... I Say A Little Prayer, now there's a GREAT song...it's got that back beat, it's got soul, a fantastic melody, great chords and rhythmic interest. Gets my foot banging every time even though it's a relatively mellow kind of tune.
As for the tune I posted, well I guess horses for courses lol....personally I love that acid jazz sound, there would often be rooms playing this kind of stuff at the "artier" raves and house parties in the late 80's and early 90's. Yes it's kinda cheesy but I don't know, gets me moving. Perhaps it's the memories....
There were some great old jazz funk tunes doing the rounds among the acid jazz DJ's back then, I love anything with cool horn riffs, breakbeats and outside playing. This is one I remember from back then, Patrice Rushen (of "Forget Me Nots" fame) with "Haw Right Now." The keyboard solo in this not only gets my foot banging but my fist pumping too...
