I've always had issues with restoring a backup and being no better off.

I recently lost the ability to boot my Sonar drive, restored a backup (Acronis 2015) and it still would not boot.

I persevered a bit and found that I could put the windows 8 cd in, go to advanced/command line and type in

bootrec.exe /ScanOs

This shows any windows installations which have not been picked up by the boot configuration (why the boot config isn't part of the backup I don't know!)

Anyway, it's all working fine again, I seem to get the problem every few months where the MBR gets corrupt or something. *shrugs

I would check Windows event logs to see if maybe the drive is generating errors.  If this has happened more than once, I would be replacing it.  Drives are way cheap these days.

Congrats Shambler on getting it back in action.....it's amazing how much we depend on our PC's.....that goes out and everything (music/internet/movies etc...) stops working.
I also use Acronis (2013 I think) and luckily haven't had a need to use restore.....hope to keep it that way.

Makes me wish we could have a ROM for the core files of the OS so they couldn't be corrupted.

They too have a shelf life though.

And I have had home made CDs fail after years of storage.

Me too, especially when I find them stored at the bottom of a box that ended up under a bunch of heavier other boxes!

Have you upgraded Acronis to the build which is designed to work with Windows 10? The original apparently was not.

I would guess that both the image and the restore would need to be made with that build.

Hi,

Been lucky so far with W10, and no issues on any machine. Hope it stays that way!

I'm going to stay with Windows 9...

Make sure when you do your backup that you select the whole drive and all the fiddly extra partitions too NOT JUST C: then heck you shouldn't have trouble doing a restore. And when you restore you want to select to restore the disk signature too.

Sorry if I have pointed out the obvious, if so I hope that never happens to me.

Nothing like seeing windows come up after that kind of drama.
I hope those nearest to you can appreciate it.

You are the Boss.

(For a day) ;-)
