  • Extiporaneously - Open SONAR's crash dump folder

Keith Albright [Cakewalk]
Just wanted to let you all know how to currently view any crash dumps captured by SONAR.

Open Help About:

Press and hold the Alt key and click the Legal button with the mouse.

The minidumps folder should appear.

If not, you'll find it here:

%appdata%\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\MiniDumps
Note: for other flavors of SONAR, just replace the SONAR Platinum name with SONAR Artist, SONAR Professional, etc.

If on the rare occasion SONAR crashes it usually captures the crash and saves it in a minidumps folder. If that folder doesn't exist or is empty, there's nothing to worry about.  Minidump files have the extension .dmp.  The filename has the title of the project that was open at the time of the crash and usually a date time suffix in the form _MMDDYYYY_HHMMSS.dmp

A minidump file contains information of use to developers in order to see the state of the running threads in the program as well as loaded modules.  We had built a system for capturing these, sending them to Cakewalk and doing the analysis.  However, if one were a plugin developer and using the plugin crashed SONAR, that dump can be used to find out why the plugin crashed.  Otherwise, if Fault Reporter submitted the issue to us, you don't need to resend it.

But if you have an offline system, then you can manually send those files to us for analysis.  For now you can PM me any of these, but please don't resend me ones that have already gone through the connected system.

What does ''extiporaneously'' mean?

It means "Prepared in advance but delivered without notes or text", "Skilled at or given to unrehearsed speech or performance" or "Carried out or performed with little or no preparation".

Well I literally just tossed that one out there based on extemporaneous without preparation.
So it's a tip but not in the same league as the long running Friday tips.

I'm not a wordsmith and Craig's contributions to this community have been truly remarkable and deeply appreciated and we'll miss them.  I know Craig will continue to write about music and technology so I'm sure the community at large will continue to benefit from his insights and nifty ideas!

Yeah, I could probably do with a better title but it's what popped in my head on a Friday after all the coding on 2017.10.

Not really related to the post, but I'd personally love it if one or two Cakewalk bakers could carry on the tips. Even if they're not every week, I'd love to see some more input from the people who are involved in making Sonar what it is. This was a really nice start.

That's a handy little feature. Please pass along our appreciation for whoever threw that in.

And while you're at it, how about having it pop up an analysis of the last dump? That should be a half-day project at most. ;)

I like 'extiporaneously'! Clever.

Like some social media genius (I mean that sincerely) at KFC. A Twitter user finally figured it out. KFC follows only 11 people on its Twitter account, the 5 former Spice Girls and 6 different guys named Herb.

Brilliant!

Very handy tip - thanks Keith. Made even better by blazing the neologist trail!

Big fan of bitflippers suggestion too:)
