I had recorded this band five times or so.

He had no idea whether I know anything or not. I recommended a little more kick and he did add it.

I think I wanted to feel a little solidarity with him.

He mentioned the exorbitant cost of Pro Tools. He said it was like 1k or 1.5k depending on what you get. You know, I may have started with Sonar because of the price. I think he was graciously excusing my choice because of the cost.

I told him it costs me 100 a year to stay on the top version. That got his attention.

I mentioned Ubuntu studio and that got his attention too.

Pro Tools cost me a total of $298 - initial purchase of Pro Tools MP for $99 in 2012 and the upgrade to PT full for $199 in 2014. Free updates and support until end of March 2016, and a perpetual license. Not a bad deal. :)

Of course, that's not the super high-end hardware-based version, whatever that's called these days.

That sounds entirely reasonable.

Protools has been used in a live setting for a while now. The consoles are actually very good. I'm guessing the kid just came out of Full Sail. That is a school you go to when you want to be a "professional roadie" and your parents have too much money to blow. People who go there are generally not respected in the industry because the school doesn't teach them how to be on the road; just how to be button pushers, the kids come out arrogant and with a sense of entitlement that they quickly need to lose when they get on a tour or life becomes very difficult for them.

Sonar is not what I'd consider a road worthy product. Great in the studio but for a life show, not so much. ProTools is designed for it.
