  • Do you use the included Sonitus FX Suite In Sonar? (p.5)

Yes I do. Sonitus compressor mostly, because I like to see where level is on the compressor curve, and what happens to the curve when I change knee, gain and so on. Most tracks are just a bit compressed in my projects, and the Sonitus is the lightest tool to put anywhere (light in term of resources), copied and pasted from track to track in the mixer view.
Then I sometimes use the delay, which has a lot of features, with its 2 independent lines. The modulator finally, when I want to be a little odd.
I used to use also the eq, but now I prefer the prochannel. Finally never used the others, perhaps gate once.

Yes, I do. On about every song. I get pretty good bass - bass drum separation using side chain compression with the single channel compressor. I like to mic the bass drum with a d112 and either a 414 or an r121. That goes to a submix. Then the bass guitar DI and another d112 on the bass speaker cabinet to its own submix. I then create a master bass submix. I put that sonitus compressor on the bass guitar submix - then output that bass guitar submix to the master bass submix. I add a send from the bass drum submix to the bass guitar submix sonitus compresser, and output the bass drum submix to the master bass submix. I then low pass on the bass d112 at below 200 or so, and high pass on the bass di at 200 or so. I can use one of many compressors but that Sonitus display helps me tweek fast and it sounds great.

I have almost every kind of processor and efx at least 5 times over.  Much more than I'll ever want or need.
And with the exception of the 30th Anniversary plugins and FX chains, I've never used Sonitus processors.   I'm kind of hooked on iZotope products.  Neutron, Nectar, and Ozone for mastering are my go-to production bundles.  And now with their O8N2 or Music Production Suite, it's got everything you could possibly want or need.  It was their cool UI that finally won me over (about 3 versions ago)

There are lots of other bundles or suites that are not as memory intensive as Izotope, including the Sonitus Suite.
But it always seems to come down to whatever you are most comfortable in using.
I look at this list of processors and FX that come with Sonar Platinum and often think to myself, hmm, maybe I should check that one out.  There's just so much available though, and I get easily overwhelmed at the choices, along with the learning curves for the one's i haven't tried yet.  So yeah, I basically stick to what I'm used to....which is Izotope products and TH3 for my guitar processing. I also have more VSTi's than I will ever use.  Dozens of guitars, organs, basses, pianos, wind and string instruments, drums and percussion instruments.  Enough virtual gear to fill a small warehouse if they were actual physical instruments.

But I'm like a cat with ADD, something shiny and new enters my line of vision, and I'm like "Oooh, that looks cool".
It's so hard to keep up with everything.  It seems something new and revolutionary is hitting the market every week.

You can learn a lot about compression working through the GUI of the SONitus comp.

I use eq, gate and delay a lot and prefer them to other 3rd party plugs - partly because I've been using them for years and also because of the no-nonsense layout.

Though I use many different plugs, I always feel confident that I have the Sonitus plugs which are reliable to use when I need them.  Thank you for that.

I use most of them, I would say the compressor is my favorite, followed by the delay. EQ is perfect for utility, and not relying on visual feedback to tune. Reverb is nice for cranking the Early reflections to add a subtle sense of space to dry samples. Multi-band was a great help before I discovered dynamic EQ. Gate has many helpful features as well. I could do a mix with just these, and come up with a competitive mix, I think (except I would probably miss using saturation too much).

...I'll be revisiting some of them as a result of reading this thread.

Yup, same here...

However, recently, I enabled the EQ on the RME UFX Plus and I was just blown away, it's 3 Band very simple but extremely clean, no color as in tube like or tape saturation like sound.

Good Day, funny you say, it does sound great I often use RME EQ while listening to a mix to see where I want to adjust and try to emulate it, also compressor, reverb and delay. I dont want to record with these FX applied, but would like to use as external effects on recordings, I had just been looking into how to do this.  Do you know the best way to do this?

Otherwise I often also use various Sonitus FX.

Cheers

This was something I had looked into. Unfortunately, you cannot record with these FX on the RME. Meaning they were not design for such purpose and so there are no settings which will easily allow you to accomplish this.

There are ways to do this but based on what I have researched, the work does not merit the benefits.
According to RME these effects are simply design as a way to monitor playback.

I also found a discussion on another forum regarding this very topic and the conclusion was no, it cannot be done that way.

You could record if the unit was being used as stand alone but not if you are getting the audio from within Sonar and than trying to add FX and return it to record in Sonar.

Nothing is impossible.
