I too can hear lyrics to this.  But I like it as is.  I like when the chords/chorus? come in at 50 seconds.  I can hear the snare you're talking about, maybe just towards the end, I can hear some quit cymbals too.  But it's good this way, but I've found that even though we disagree, the Wife is usually right in these matters.  Lol.  Nice song

John, Mark, Kenny, John, Wayne, Cian, and Don,

Thanks for all the listens and comments, gents. I appreciate the feedback. I would still like to try putting up a version with the snare part, and see what you think. I also need do something a little more creative with the ending; the current one is just kind of a placeholder. And I'm sure some variation in the second pass would be welcome. You're all too kind not to have mentioned either of those shortcomings.

Nice work.

I can hear this as movie underscore in a scene.....

Loved the tone of that piano.  Especially the high notes.

Gorgeous! I'd be pretty proud of this if it were mine! Can't wait to hear the finished version...

I have no real critique beyond a mere listener.  I really dug the chord progression during the breaks, or chorus?, not sure how to interpret instrumental acoustic piano music.  Very pretty stuff, good writing.  It kept my interest despite not being a genre I'm familiar with or generally have the patience for.  Most of the time I'd skip this kind of music on the radio..I'm glad I didn't skip this.  Nice work.

Good title too, my wife has titled a couple of my songs as well.

The Maillard Reaction
Hi Dave,
It is nice to hear some of your music and it is nice to listen to the beautiful chord voicing and the movement of the melody. Nice pacing too. :-)

I do have one technical observation. It seems like the low frequencies are sort of untamed. There is a lot of unfocused energy below 80Hz that is helping to set a mood but it is also really loud. I suggest you consider a very gently sloped low shelf up near 200Hz (you'll want to experiment so you can retain the sense of moodiness) and a working mans low-cut at about 40 to clean things up from a practical standpoint. The energy that is fluttering around below 30Hz in this particular tune isn't helping convey anything and it's swamping my speakers.

I hope this comment is regarded as constructive. :-)

 best regards,
mike

David,

Nice playing.

I personally wanted to hear more. It feels like an excellent isolated track from a full ballad. I could imagine a full band with a vocalist like Robby on this one. JMO.

James, Herb, Dan, Tim, Mike, Ed. Thanks so much for listening, and commenting; glad you enjoyed it.

Mike, regarding the big low end, I'm chuckling because... you should 'a' heard it before I did something like you recommend in the posted mix: Almost 10dB shelving cut at 44Hz, and another 4dB down at 99Hz. So I guess I was on the right track, but didn't twist the level and/or Q knobs far enough.   Actually I did have that low cut down quite a bit further at one point but thought it was getting too thin for a solo piece. I love the feel of that low end when I'm playing and I think it comes through pretty well on my Behringer Truths, but I'll definitely give that another listen. Good input, much appreciated.
