Thought it would be nice to share a story of Cakewalk employees using SONAR X2 to create a remix. As you may know, one of the cool things about Cakewalk is that many of its' employees are also musicians. In testing SONAR X2a, we used a track created by Cakewalk's Dan Kaplan for testing. Cakewalk QA Engineer Lance Riley ended up doing a remix of his song and it came out so well that we decided to share the remix techniques with our customers. We hope this story will give you some ideas for doing your own remixes. The CA-2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier is featured prominently on vocals. And of course, we used Z3TA+ 2 on this track which just goes to show how truly versatile this synth is for all types of music. Enjoy!  Read the blog

Sorry I guess it isn't locked.

A cool song, I can't use ARC on soundcloud but as I said in the Sonar forum, I'm hearing some not so pleasing tones from some of the synths. possibly just to loud. Could be my age and unfamiliarity with modern Pop sounds, and also could be my room. Also the vocals sound a bit muddy and in the background.

My main interest in this is Lance said he mixed it with cans. I have that VRM box on the way and would like to have confidence that I will be able to do some mixing with cans when I'm away from my monitors.

I'm afraid I'm still hearing a great song that sounds like it was mixed in cans. I'm very interested in what others are hearing for this.

[<font]I like the song a lot. I love the vocals on it. To me it seems the bass, bass drum and vocals dominate the mix. You can hear everything else but at times are stepped on by the forementioned.

Nice production. I think it needs an acoustic guitar as it all seems to have the same one dimension throughout.
Love the kik in particular.
Vocals cut through just right for my taste.
Tune is a little lacking IMO but probably doesn't matter.
Nice.

Well, that is certainly an impressive bit of showcase work. I do so love Z3ta. Vocals are spacial and atmospheric. Right on boys and girls.

It's good to see the Cakewalk employees catching up to some of the members of this forum.  You will find many more examples of the power of X2 by listening to some of the songs here.  You have created the best mixing platform in your company's history, and we appreciate it.

How many listened to the original and compared it to the 'remix"?

To my ears, both mixes have strengths and weaknesses.

The original is much clearer but is lacking a nice bottom. It has a more present middle.

I like the vocals in the remix but the bottom is much to heavy.

Both mixes need some work to get them "there".... IMHO

A very well refined and cutting edge mix showing the strengths of both the musician, the mixer and the software.

I appreciate the entire effort. From writing the song. To the Write up about the Remix. Displaying Dans original prominently allowing us to see how he is marketing his work.(important to me)

I couldn't/Wouldn't suggest changing a thing

There is a time, when you have to say the best way to spend your time is to make another one.

Do you guys ever do remix contests?

Peace young brothers
May you all rock stars be.

Personally, I'm with Herb and did listen to the original first, then the remix. Here is my thoughts on this. The original is the original, done in an original way with much thought going into it and was a great sounding song in itself. Then along comes the remix with new technology with different ideas in mind and so now the original is not an original any more in the remix piece, but a remake with new minds applying new technologies. They are both great for what they are and both versions show skill and talent in composition, arrangement, production and of course some great vocals. Very well done on both versions. Now, if you give the original to 25 other people, I'm sure we will have 25 new versions that most likely will sound pretty good as well. Music is like art in a sense, it is in the seeing for art and the hearing for the musician, and the composer, producer, arranger, etc. have their perspective as well. No matter what, it is always good to have great software to work with no matter what your taste in music is, it has to get the job done and done the way you like it. Great job by the Cakewalk employees.

Peace and blessings, John
