Greetings!

I did this in Sonar 6 a few years ago.  I have honed my skills a bit since then and have better tools to work with, but before I worked on improving it in Sonar X1, I wanted to get some feedback.

very nice Jerry. Nice playing and vocals.
Two things I picked up on - the cymbal hits are too loud and there is a fair amount of hiss on the vocal in the quiet sections - back of the compression.

Great job on the cover. I think I have this song memorized to the smallest details and I have to say you did it perfectly. Too bad you don't have a 12-string. As for the mix, the drums have a bit too much reverb so it reduces the punch.

I always admire anyone who is willing to tackle an iconic song like this.  You got the parts down very well and played them to perfection.  As was mentioned, the reverb doesn't quite sit right in the mix, and your guitar doesn't quite have that Les Paul sound (I believe he played a double neck guitar on this), but those are small nits that could easily be mended.  All in all, a helluva job.

Hi Jerry-

Sounds pretty dam* good. The cymbals need to have some of their lower tones brought back into the mix. They sound like they've been cut at too high of a frequency. If possible...is there a way to add some life to the snare? The parts are well done, but the tones for each hit sound identical. If there's a way to mix it up, it would sound a bit more Bonzo-like.

The guitar tones sound great, especially the acoustic and clean tones. The lead tone could use some effects removed and have a little more of the straight LP through a tube amp tone.

Overall, I was impressed. This song is too easy for many of us to pick apart. The comments I made are only valid if you're trying to sound closer to the original. But, the way you've done it sounds great.

Best Regards.

Thanks Daryl,
I did the drums on a Roland SR-16 (before Session Drummer came out).  I plan to redo them with Session Drummer.  The tempo continuously changes throughout the song, so it will be fun trying to sync everything I am sure.  The hiss on the vocals was due to the fact I used a Radio Shack pos mic.  I did this song long before I had good tools.

Jerry It would be easy to tear this apart and to see what can be done better, but I think that I need to acknowledge that you did a great job recording the song. all the parts sound very much like the original. Ok here is my advice.

If you redo the drums and you use Session drummer go into the steven slate kits and use one of the Zeppelin kits. I think there are 3 or four of them in there.

On the intro there seems to be too much reverb on the guitar. I noticed the guitar was on the left side of the stereo field. Try some automation on the pan after the intro. don't take the guitar totally hard left leave some room.

Make sure you post the song after you redo it so we can enjoy your improvements!

Man, I loved this.  I listened twice while I was posting and forgot it wasn't LZ.  Really powerful in instruments and vocal.  My only crit would be the heavy reverb on the vocal after the solo.  High isn't it?  :-)   Great job!

this sounds like it was recorded more than just a few years ago.
it almost sounds like analog, because digital doesnt bend,it breaks.
i also have an sr 16,great drum machines, where you tapping these with your fingers?
the velocitys where verywhere.
but all in all i loved the guitar work and the vocals though drifted sometimes a little out of key sounded very good as well.
you got some stones man...big ones too.
not many people attempt such a beautified song in fear of mangling it.
you did it justification, nice work dude.
