I noticed a real improvement on the second recording. I think the guitars are too mono, at least here on my end I'm not hearing the spacial effect sometimes associated in this genre.

The effect is usually had by tracking at least several times and treating each track a little differently. Sometime players will actually record multiple tracks instead of copying them and treating them. I don't typically play this kind of music so I'm sure others could give you a better idea of what they do to achieve the best tracks. You could use something like shed spread and I think waves makes a decent plug or two specifically for this kind of guitar. I would suggest playing with the recipe until you get what you want which might involve taking at least two tracks of the guitar in phase and adjusting panning and eq to get a good spread in the stereo field. It is well known that the best produced heavy metal bands use tons of multiple tracks, maybe with some slight detuning. I'm not even really scratching the surface here. It is a real art to get a good powerful sound recorded using multiple tracks. The recipe usually includes miked guitar amps going in using good equipment. This can be combined with something like guitar rig to get to where you want to be. I would probably make the guitar a little more edgy in the mid range and then fill it out with bass. It sounded rather hollow to me.

One thing I have found out when I experimented with metal type music was that many of the pickups that are claimed to be best for metal are way too muddy coming direct from the guitar with no treatment. Since I sometimes play with a Variax I can try different pickup configurations. Guess what comes across the best for me when using distortion? Either an acoustic type output or a single coil pickup believe it or not. That way you keep the definition of the tone. At least this has been my own personal experience.

great sounding guitars, the bass drum could use some punch. Will there be vocals?

Those lyrics are very inspiring? I surprised you didn't make them in to a Christmas song? Everyone here should strive to produce such inspirational music, and support everything you do! Praise his name with more works like this!

The love? The peace? The forgiveness? It quite literally brought a tear to my eye... And the horned devil icon in the picture? "Priceless." Clearly someone who truly values his teachings?

A buddy of mine plays similar music. I offered to remix some of his old band stuff.... more of a polish the tracks sorta thing, since the original tracks do not exist after all these years.... what a chore that was.  So I was listening to lots of this style...and I'll be the first to admit, as a country writer, I know very little about it. I did what I could with the poorly recorded and overloaded tracks.

If I can't hum the melody.......I have a hard time with a song.  As Band19 commented on the lyrics..... rather dark stuff.

I heard the song linked in the OP and V3. It sounds like it's coming along. As I said I don't listen to this style, but I would like to hear it with the vox.

Not my genre, but my gut instincts tell me the guitars should be wider in the stereo field and more punchy. Like another poster commented earlier you should prob go for mulitple takes on the guitar and then play around with the tone with EQ or slightly altering the pitch.
