First let me say Slapping Thumping and popping is pretty cool. I like it and do a little myself. 

However, I watch the young ones coming up and that's all I see all over youtube. Very young players slapping and popping the heck out of their instrument and boy are they good at it. Very good!! I can't do most of it but could get there if I put the time in I suppose. 


My point is I hope they are learning theory about chord changes. I hope they are learning about just the right touch for what the song calls for. I hope they are learning various styles and that sometimes just plucking a delicate note full of juicy fat deep smooth rumble and letting it sit just right - can be just as enjoyable as slapping and popping 150 BPM funk grove for an hour. 

I HOPE the are experiencing musicality and diversity in it ALL -- its such a great instrument. Slap and pop all you want its fun... But it's just ONE thing you can do with a bass and there are many - learn as much as you could.

I pretty much always have felt that Bass needed to hold down a solid foundation.  
 
I  started playing live again about 6 months ago with our Worship Band.  There are 3 of us, so we rotate every third week.  When I started playing with this group, I told the Worship Leader that I was going to play pretty conservatively and stay close to the root and in the pocket, compared to the other 2 guys that played.  They like to do runs all over the neck.  The first week I played with the band, the WL turned to me after the second service and said that my playing sounded awesome.  Probably because I stayed in the pocket and didn't try to out play the guitarists on runs.    
 
I play guitar as well.  To me, it makes a lot more sense musically to do all of the soloing on an electric guitar.  

As a lead guitarist, you're my kind of Bass player!!

I second that, I've played with a few guys that exceled at all that popping and slapping. Unfortunately neither was able or interested in holding the foundation together, had little interest in any other style than Primus. To each his own but I much prefer the dynamics and style of an old seasoned cat like you or that vst junkie you hang with.
