  • [Solved] Delete Hole Not Working in X3e

I hate posting bugs but I'm one of those people who believes that if enough people post about a particular issue, Cakewalk might pay attention to it.
The rep I spoke to was able to duplicate the following issue, but I'm left to wonder if I have to wait until X4 for it to be fixed. I actually had to wait from X1 until the latest version of X2 for a midi issue to be resolved. I need my fast food fix now!

Here's the BUG:

Compose a song with several tracks.
Select all tracks and then select a few measure you want to delete and choose DELETE SPECIAL specifying that SONAR DELETES THE HOLE.

Execute and the HOLE is NOT DELETED.

There more:

Go for the Work-around. Highlight the right section of the your composition and CUT it and then choose track one and the mark where you want it pasted. Now PASTE

The measures are pasted into place but other measures around the piece in various locations, to the right and left of the paste point, have vanished.

The only way I have found to get around this (which is a little tedious when doing a lot of editing) is to highlight, click and drag the section into place.

It shouldn't be this way.

Please fix this, Cakewalk

Thanks.

For Delete Hole to work, you MUST have some data - midi or audio - actually In The Hole!!

I just did your steps and it worked fine. Maybe there's automation data, the automation box isn't checked, and the automation doesn't change so it appears the hole hasn't been deleted?

I use this function a lot, so I don't think I just got lucky.

I would like to see full ripple editing in Sonar.

Regarding 'Delete hole', try unchecking 'Shift by whole measures' if that is checked.

"The measures are pasted into place but other measures around the piece in various locations, to the right and left of the paste point, have vanished".

I have been experiencing this for years. As a work around I slip edit the adjacent clips and then move them back after I paste the clip in the space.

Of course there's DATA. (sigh...)

(Yes, Leebut. Tried that whole measure thing too. No difference.)

Record a few tracks 16 measures in length full of MIDI and AUDIO.
Now select ALL
Highlight measures 6-8.
Choose Delete Special and check DELETE HOLE.
In previous versions, when executing, the measures selected (6-8) would delete and the hole would also delete.
In the new version (X3) it does not delete the hole. It only deletes the content of measures 6-8. Measures 9-16 should have shifted against the end of Measure 5.
I've tried this on three installations with other users and experienced the same results.
It works fine in X2  and backwards.

Bluzdog: Interesting that you've experienced the slide and vanish bug in previous versions. I ran a few tests today to see if there were any common triggers. It appears that if there are any measures copied and pasted in the composition, the vanishing measures bug happens without fail.
IE: If I copy a drum fill from measure 4 to measure 15 and measure 20. Then slip a section backwards, the portions that were copied and pasted as well as the area where they were copied from get impacted. (They vanish)

I am going to confirm the OP.  "Delete Hole" in Sonar X3 is not working properly.  I edit midi data everyday and can tell you it has not functioned corectly for couple of versions.

I do not ever have the time to mess around and see when it does or does not work, I'm under too much pressure with deadlines.  I suspect that when notes are hanging over barlines the edit does not happen.  Sometimes I will try to "Delete Hole" and it will work..sometimes only some tracks will fill the hole...sometimes it deletes what is in the selected area, but nothing moves.

it only takes 10 more seconds for me to "slide" everything over,  so I use that work around.  But when you have tempo and meter changes it can be a lot of work.

I hope it gets fixed also.

Wait a second...is it a MIDI or audio issue that's being discussed? I couldn't tell specifically from the first post, so I assumed it was about audio. That's what I tested and which worked.

I too can confirm that "Delete Hole" very rarely works properly on my projects. It seems like when I create a new project, it will work for a small amount of time in that project and then something happens that seems to turn it off. It just stops working and will not work again in that project. There are also times when the first time I go to use it in a project, it will not work. The problem is always that the selected area will delete, but the hole remains.
I have not yet been able to pin down what that something is to make this occur. As soon as I come across it, I'll post.
I'm sure I have seen threads regarding this issue but I have more pressing issues and have not followed this problem up. I will just work around it by sliding the tracks over the hole. I am assuming that "Delete Hole" works just fine for most users as it has not been a particularly active problem, at least that I can see.
I am also assuming that it is not my method, as sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I have spent only a small amount of time trying to work out why this is happening, and although it's a small amount of time I believe I have been quite thorough, but have found no reason as to why this is occurring.
The most interesting/confusing/frustrating part of this issue is that "Delete Hole" often (but not all the time) seems to work ok when I create a new project, then seems to stop working after a small amount of time working with that project. Nothing specific seems to trigger the failure, I just go to use it and it will not work. As I said, the "delete" part will function fine, it's just that the hole remains.
I have many other issues with my projects and although I would like to get this one sorted, it is not particularly high on my list. It only slows down my workflow, not stop it or change it creatively.

Hi:
If the tracks that you have did have some copy and paste before, then for me, I usually have to Apply Trimming then everything will be OK.
Especially for midi tracks, when I copy and paste, the copied part sometimes extend to the righ and to the left, therefore, like the OP said, after Paste, the regions on both sides disappear.
When that happens, copy that part on a new track, apply trimming then move to the right track that you want to paste to originally. Yes 2 more steps, but it works very well.
