I still haven't found any great deals for guitar related software so, what about Revalver? Anyone use it? How does it stack up? I don't play metal, so I'll be hoping for other tones. Is the usb dongle thing a pain?
I looked and since I have Revalver V.III (or whatever it's called) I qualify for the $49.99 upgrade. I'm a S-Gear user and I'm happy with it and Amplitube, but I want more guitar stuff. Call it gas or collecting...I'm guilty.

FYI Plugin alliance deal of the day is bass dude for 49 today.

I have revalver. It has some nice sounds. Usb dongle hasn't proven to be a pain thus far.

It's not to bad, I haven't used it much for ages, fire it up every now and then, and shut it down just as fast. Best thing is to give it a whirl, it has good effects and it sounds fine, you can get good sounds/tone from anywhere from clean to heavy and anything in between, it's got a reasonable amount of tweakability. I would put it ahead of the likes of S-Gear 2 and Amplitube, and there in lies the rub, your opinions on those 2 are different to mine, so . . . Best thing is to try it out for yourself, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, it's yours and only your opinion that matters.

But Revalver 4 is most certainly a solid amp sim. The basic Revalver 4 'app' is free, not sure what comes with that if any, I just brought the lot when it was released.

It doesn't seem too popular.

I have been using R4 this whole year. I like it. I have a lot of the add ons as well.
It is responsive and I can get good tones for blues and rock with my Strat.
The put a lot of effort into it.
You can also use any 3rd party VST's with it (I bring up Vahalla for example).
I got it for $49.

Now there's a selling point. I wish Amplitube did this. I've been asking for years.

Yes and no, as has been mentioned above, there are a lot of people that despise it's protection, doesn't bother me, and had no issues with it, light years better than something like iLok IMO. Also the NFR goes against the grain for a lot of folk. I looked into it, and although you can sell or give away anything you like, to sell or give away Revalver 4 (perhaps any NFR product) there is a certain amount of personal information which 'could possibly' become available to the receiver because they would basically be inheriting your account, personal details, CC info etc, so I thought it not in my best interests, and a hassle.

There are however many people who swear by it, and of course popularity does not equal good, just take EDM for one :) Revalver 4 is not bad by any means, and it is better than a lot IMO, it just doesn't hit the mark for me as some other products do. I have told myself I wont be upgrading it again, but when the time comes I probably will as it's usually only $100 or so, and who knows the next version might grab me, I doubt it though, but if it does all well and good.

It does have some cool ideas such as being able to load vsts anywhere in the signal path. Very cool feature. Could be unstable but broadly worked ok. Running Amplitube and Guitar Rig inside Revalver at the same time is crazy cool.
I used to like the way you could load effects between the power and eq sections like a real guitar effects loop. That was another great feature, but they seem to have dropped that - just as Amplitube adopted it.
Effects are really great.
Sound wise you needed to tweak eq to control hiss, but no more than any other amp sim.
All amp sims seem to exaggerate hiss too much - why?. None of my real guitar amps produce that much hiss at room volume. Even the Valve King which is directly modelled in the software.
I thought it had the edge on Amplitube 3. Cant comment on yet on Amplitube 4.
I still dont think any ampsim has quite nailed that pushing air with a Quadbox speaker sound yet.
Price wise revalver is good value
All dongles suck.

Well I bought it. It was only $49.99 so...why not.
I agree with everything FZ1 has said in the above post about amp sims in general, but for me...S-Gear is clearly the best one out there right now.
Revalver 4 has some interesting things that will be fun to explore. The VST loader has been hit and miss, but my Valhalla stuff works.
I'm just getting familiar with how everything works right now. I'm not sure which usb device it's been tied to. That just kind of happened on it's own. I thought it would ask which one I wanted, but I assume it went with my soundcard...who knows.
I'll play around with it more in time. My first impression is it's well worth the $49.99. I haven't played through any of the amps in real life so I don't know where to start really. It will take some time to find the amps and speakers combinations I like.
