I would also tell myself to go practice, practice, practice.  One trick (or in my case, one take) ponies are soon gone.
...

As a director I would tell you this differently ... quantity is inversely proportional to quality ... and if you have to "practice that much, it usually means that your learning is not getting past the fingering (for example), or your concentration (another example).

This is one of the most important things I learned and taught in theater with actors learning lines ... you can learn 100 lines and deliver them within an hour or two with 100% concentration. You can not deliver these 100 hours within 2 or 3 days, without a good quality concentration, and guess where musicians fare weakly in MY EXPERIENCE ... they are too critical and STOP, just to say it's wrong! Pat yourself in the back. You are wrong!

But, if it is a physical thing, like muscle memory ... I don't know ... I can not see McGlothlin or Gismonti spending that much time on "muscle memory! They spend much more time listening to you and replying to it in their fingers, regardless of what it is in your "translation" of what notes they played! That is "instinct" for you!

People like McLaughlin don't become as proficient as they are without hours and hours, days, weeks, months and years of practising. They learned those dreaded notes, and scales and modes and chords and inversions. Inside out and backwards. They had to.

It's after all that that they can combine instinct with technique. McLaughlin studied piano and violin as a child. He was a session guitarist for a long time before he became well known, like many other virtuoso players.

note to Kenny from the past , timeline target 7 hours ago ,
It was great that you spent an hour typing up posts to reply to the people you quoted because you wanted to stay in the loop and rap with people. You did good there Kid . Where you went terribly wrong was you had gotten the idea to go fetch a cup of coffee  to sip while you made sure your post contained  what you wanted to say .
Little did you know that you are gonna accidentally spill coffee on your USB i Mac  keyboard and wipe yourself totally out of the game ...
Then you are gonna go to the store and spend up what little bit of chump change you have to play with on a replacement 2nd rate USB replacement keyboard ...once you get it home you will find out that it was a total POS so you are gonna use it only to shut down your computer . Then you are gonna walk Duke a mile to the Office Depot store and return the keyboard for a refund on your CC. Having pulled a good save on your cash you will go home and put your computer in it's box to sit there until you figure out what you want to do about it ..
Then your gonna have a cup of coffee at the kitchen table where most people drink their coffee and when you get done with that . You are gonna wire up your Windows lap top and start all over ...

Anyway I'll be back and I have enjoyed your posts
