Not looking for something to produce final tunes with.  I'm interested in something to work as a scratchpad.

chordpulse is pretty good and works well as a scratchpad.  I think it's $25.

There is the old jammer pro but it's a bit long in the tooth. My vote would be BIAB.

But now that I look at chord pulse.....WAY less overhead, and by that I mean, a lot less features I won;t use..... so Ima play with chordpulse a bit before the Christmas sales at PG.

I think I'm not gonna upgrade BIAB... ChordPulse is da bomb!

ChordPulse is great. It was just upgraded to v2.4 a month ago, so the dev is still alive and kicking. The update added some useful chord types. Here's what v2.4 added:

Version 2.4:

- chord types added: 5, 6sus, 7b5, 7b9, 7#9, 7alt, 7sus, mM7, 9, m9, M9,
      9sus, 9b5, 9#5, 69, m69, m11, 13, m13, M13
- new chord selectors: standard (17 chord types) and extended (36 chord types)
- chord voicing options: rootless voicing, open harmony
- chord notation options, chord qualities are now in subscript
- new style selector with categories, sorting options, tempo and time signature information
- 11 new music styles in "Jazz+Blues" category, one new style in "Synth" category
- improved Swing and Jazz Ballad styles
- some jazz/blues preset chord progressions added/renamed
- new sample sessions: Blues, Jazz Loop, Minor Blues, Rock Base, Vintage Jazz;
      in folder "Samples/More": Even Jazz, Minor Blues 2, Unwind
- music styles renamed: Slow 9/8 -> Slow Rock 9/8, Tsamikos 3/4 -> Tsamikos, Easy Swing -> Tale Swing,
      Soft Swing -> Swing - Pad, Soft Swing 3/4 -> Swing - Pad 3/4
- additional minor improvements, changes, and fixes

A bargain for $22! Check out the videos: http://chordpulse.com/videos.html

I have BIAB 2014 Pro+ (anyone else think they have WAY too many different versions?). On a DVD. No longer installed on my PC. I hated it.

It took me about 5 minutes to put this Hotel California jam together. Here's the exported Type 1 MIDI file (I just threw this up quick; you'll get an error message re can't play audio file, and then a prompt to download):

Excellent!  It's $21.95 ... I'll give the trial a day or two, but I think this is all I'm after.  Thanks

The trial version is v2.2, but should give you a good idea. Good luck.

Good find bjornpdx!! I too have BIAB (2013 I think) and haven't really used it much......the gui is just yuck...yuck....yuck....but, the program itself is fantastic.

Chordpulse might be a good alternative for quick results......for us impatient simpletons.
