Howdy!  I have a stereo track in Sonar Platinum 2017.08 x64.  If I drag two mono wave files (drum overheads, for example) to the stereo track to import them, they do not conjoin to stereo as I would hope.  I wish that were a feature.  I also cannot select them as mono clips in the track view and drag them to the stereo track.  Selecting two mono tracks and right-clicking to "Convert to Stereo" will only convert them both to Stereo individually.
 
Bouncing two mono files to stereo via the Tracks menu is unfortunately not an effective workaround when needing to work quickly and I won't get into that one.  I'm trying to avoid working with mono files that will receive the same treatment and may as well be stereo. It's not the end of the world but bogs down the mixing and editing process (for me, at least).. especially in a creative situation where the producer or artist wants to move clips around and audition different arrangements or approaches.
 
Does anyone have a workflow or method they prefer that I failed to mention?  
It seems that working with separate mono tracks is the lesser of evils.
 
If no one has a method, I'll post an idea.  Thanks for reading.  This is a basic operation but can be difficult to search on.

You could just send them to a stereo buss and treat that as you like

Hi Nicko!  Thanks for your thoughts.   Unfortunately, that may tend to get a bit cumbersome once the amount of stereo pairs build up.  The goal is to simplify.

How would you like the 2 imported mono tracks to sit in the stereo field, hard right and hard left?

Indeed.

1. Bring each mono file into its own Take Lane with a track.
2. Select them both and choose Convert Mono to Stereo.
3. Pan one Take Lane full left, the other full right.
4. Bounce them both to clip. The track will now contain a stereo file.
 
Once the two mono files are in the Take Lanes, it takes about 15 seconds to complete the operation if you use Smart Swipe to select the takes, Quick Group to select Pan Automation, and keyboard shortcuts for Convert to Stereo and Bounce to Clip. A macro recorder could probably speed that up.

Here's a method that doesn't require bouncing, but it is gui intensive.
1. Create a new stereo audio track.
2. Drag one of your clips into it.
3. Drag the other clip into it, same spot.
(edit: missed a step. Need to set the track interleave widget back to stereo because dragging in a mono clip flips the interleave to mono)
4. Click the track header "lanes" widget so you can see both clips.
5. Set both lanes to show clip pan automation for both.
(edit: modified 5-6-7 to 5-6)
6. Set clip pans accordingly, one hard left, one hard right. (Holding down <ctrl> while clicking anywhere in a pan automation line is an easy way to move the whole line)

I assume the only reason the OP doesn't want to do bouncing is because of thinking that would require creating a separate track, choosing bounce options, etc. The method suggested in my post does require bouncing, but only the take lanes within the track...it's pretty transparent and fast.

Maybe the bounce in your procedure is not strictly required. Also, seems like the convert to stereo is not required (it's two bounces); just change the track interleave to stereo.

Good thinking! But when I tried it, unless you do the bounce, the tracks won't appear as stereo (even with the track interleave set to stereo).
