Just made a new track for a company video ... brief was to be "atmospheric ... cinematic ... melodic"

Not sure if I managed that, any feedback appreciated ... https://soundcloud.com/ambientindigo/vermillion-road

Made with a variety of soft synths, especially Zebra2 and Omnisphere.

I would say, mission accomplished in all of the 3 categories!
Sounds awesome!

All the best!

That long intro: when do the Orcs crash their way into this scene? ;)

Superb attention to detail.

@NoisyNeighbour  Thank you!  Glad you enjoyed ...

@jamesyoyo  Orcs ... I had to look that one up ;-)   Lord of the Rings --- that's a great soundtrack actually.

I finally found some time to give this a good listen.  I knew I'd love it before I hit play.  Great work!  Silky smooth textures, oozing into and out of each other.  Very fluid.

As for your keywords "atmospheric ... cinematic ... melodic":
  • Atmospheric - You certainly hit this in spades.
  • Cinematic - Depending on the kind of movie/video I think you hit this one as well.  As long as it's something subdued and not too dramatic.
  • Melodic - It's not until the end section (around 4:50 and beyond) that there's a strong lead melodic instrument to latch onto, giving it a more melodic feeling, and then the song seems to fade out just as the melody is establishing itself.
PS - I'd never heard of Zebra2 before, but just checked out the video and it looks awesome.  I now have a new thing on my wish list. ;)

Hei Walt,   thanks for the listen and interesting comments.   I think I agree with you actually on the melody, instead of fading that out, I could develop it more.

Am I right, did I read you just recently got Omnisphere?    These 2 synths (Omnisphere and Zebra2) are my main go-to synths at the moment, I think they complement each other very well.   There is I heard a Zebra3 coming out, not sure exactly when, maybe on your Christmas list ;-)   Anything from Spectrasonics & U-He is good (IMHO).

Yes, I recently got Omnisphere, but so far it's not made it into any of my songs.  It doesn't "feel" like other VST synths.  It seems more about sample morphing and less about synthesis, so it's got a much longer (and more customized) learning curve, at least for me.  I'm still trying to wrap my head around an Omnisphere workflow/creative process.  It's obviously hugely powerful.  I'm just not (yet) getting how it all hangs together.

Thanks for the tip on Zebra3.  Zebra looks much more like the usual analog modeling synths I've been using (Massive, z3ta+2, etc.), so I think I could probably get it into my productions pretty quickly, once I do buy it.  I love the look of the modular patch creation page.

As far as your "Vermillion Road" soundtrack, yeah, I think the song could easily have gone on a bit longer to let it develop some more.

Well, you got the atmospheric, and a possible on cinematic, but I not sure about melodic. This has a lot of room for a lot of instrumentation, depending on what your looking for and want to do with the piece itself. On the cinematic you would need some additional instrumentation based on a theme (maybe some symphonic instrumentation), but that would again depend on what kind of movie or video it would be. For the melodic, I would want so awesome guitar work going on and some epic drums happening. But, that's just for me maybe. The atmosphere of this piece is nice though and very soothing and depending on it's use in a movie or video you could still add some additional instrumentation that helps tell a story. So, basically, you have a lot of room here for a lot of things. Very nicely done.

Peace and Blessings, John

Hei John, thanks for your detailed feedback.  I understand what you mean by the lack of instrumentation - though (apart from the last part, the melodic ending), it was intentionally "ambient atmosphere" rather than "orchestral movie score".  But yes, there would be room to develop it in a different direction.  I often wish for some searing guitar riffs, but need to find myself a guitar player first :-)

Another tune that my ears have enjoyed today.

I enjoyed the slow burn the subtle underlying textures bubbling to the surface.

Nice
