Hallo, guys, I have read the Help about the Freeze Track Option to save the CPU resources. It looks to be useful theoretically, but I would like to get some practical feedback...

So, how do you use Freeze Track for your MIDI and audio tracks? When do you use Quick Freeze option instead? Thanks.

I don't use freeze track, but I do freeze synths

And what restrains you to use Freeze Track, if it's not a secret?

I routinely freeze software instruments as soon as I feel they're "done". It's a habit going back to the days of much less-powerful computers, when freezing was often unavoidable. Although rarely necessary anymore, it still has the benefit of drastically speeding up project load times.

"Quick Freeze" should probably be called "Re-freeze". It just allows you to un-do a quick unfreeze.

At risk of speaking for Jonesey, I would guess it's because freezing synths offers the greatest benefit. The only way freezing other tracks would be of help is to freeze their effects, and most of us prefer to keep most effects live for mixing.

Yea, I freeze synths because that is how I used to do it to tape.  It frees up resources and you end up simplifying mixing since you are mixing all audio tracks (again, how I learned).  If you have a powerful enough computer you can do midi live, if that is what you want to do.

Well, the reason why I started the topic is that I recorded a lot of vocal takes yesterday and had some audio dropouts while comping. :) I have relatively good CPU, but I use 4 synths in the song, so freezing them could be a solution...

I'll begin to freeze tracks when my project playback becomes choppy/glitch-y. I recently mixed and Mastered a project in Sonar, and while I was working in the Mastering chain, plug-ins began to really suck some CPU. So, I froze the tracks. At this point, I was only adjusting busses anyway, as if Mastering stems.

Although it's not terribly reliable, you can select all the tracks you want to freeze, hold Ctrl and press the Freeze
  • button to freeze them all at once. Quick freeze is only available after a Quick Unfreeze, so the resulting bounced audio is kept/stored vs. a standard Unfreeze, where the bounced audio is probably dumped.

This post is kind of old, but rather than start a new one, I thought I'd jump on.

When you freeze an audio track that is routing to a bus that has effects on it, and/or your track has a send to another bus with effects on it, does the frozen track retain the bus effects? I'm thinking that I would manually need to bypass the bus effects or I'd still route to it and pick up those effects after freezing, right?

    Thanks,

Frozen tracks don't include bus effects, only track effects.
After the freeze, the tracks routed through a bus or using a send effect will still be so routed/sent and sound the same.

Good question. Is that like the Schindler's Cat phenomenon?😂😂
