  • [Solved] Is it possible to hide controller events but still show midi notes in midi clips in Track View?

I frequently split a midi clip in Track View in order to copy/paste the clip into another track or location. But very often the midi notes in the clip are obscured "behind" numerous continuous controllers which appear in "front" of the notes. That makes it difficult to see where to split the clip (i.e., just before a midi note). There's an option to hide clip contents, but that hides everything, including the notes. Anyone know a way to hide the controllers but show the notes? My workaround is usually to switch to PRV, and do it there, but copy/pasting clips is faster for me. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Set the Track Edit Filter to Notes.

Craig, after working with this for a few weeks, I still find myself wishing it was possible to see only note events inside the clips in Track View (with edit filter set to clips). Your workaround works, but it takes several steps. I write orchestral music with many controllers, which frequently mucks up the view of what's going on note-wise. (But sometimes it's useful to see the controllers also). So, what do you suppose are the chances of the bakers adding an option to show notes, controllers (or both) in the Track View "Display Clip Contents" dropdown menu? How would I submit such a request?
Thanks again,
Randy

Are you aware that you can change all track filter views at once by using Quick Grouping? That would let you toggle quickly between showing controllers and not showing controllers on all tracks.

Thanks - and yes, that's a useful shortcut I hadn't considered. However, in my Perfect Sonar World, I'd still like to see the clip outlines with just the notes showing - no controllers, no velocities, just notes. Why? 1.) Because I frequently have difficulty and/or unexpected results when using the copy/paste/special functions with midi data. No doubt operator error is the culprit. (In my Perfect Sonar World I would do this in Staff View, but I gave up on that a while ago and count myself among those waiting/hoping for Staff View improvements.) In the meantime, I go to track view, split midi clips as needed and ctrl-drag to copy to a new location. My desire to see just the notes was born from the need to see where to split the clips.  2.) Also, in projects with 80+ tracks and hundreds of clips, it would be nice to see "inside" the clips to see what's happening musically without the controllers essentially blocking the view. (I usually have 3 or more Staff View windows locked in the browser so I can keep tabs on the overall arrangement. For ex., unlike a standard orchestra score with two violin parts, I may need to assign 8 or more tracks to violins. This can get unwieldy, and I can "get lost" in my own score if I'm not careful. Thus my desire to see inside the clips in track view.)
Does this explanation make sense? Do you think a feature request is worth pursuing? Admittedly, this is not a show-stopper issue, and may not apply to many other users. It's just something that would make my Sonar life a little easier. Thanks again for your help!

You'll be happy to know that your perfect SONAR world exists! Simply set the Edit Filter to "Notes" in Track View, and under MIDI, don't select "Show Velocity" or any of the "Show Controllers" options. You'll see Notes Only.

FWIW a very cool option is to show velocity for selected notes only. That means velocities are hidden for any notes that aren't of interest.

Another feature that I think is wonderful is that when Notes is selected, when you move a clip it temporarily shows the controllers and velocities as long as the clip is being moved. Once it lands wherever you want, it goes back to showing notes only.

Okay you are making me re-think my workflow big-time. I've avoided the inline PRV for years, because it 'looks and acts differently' from the "real" PRV. Maybe that's the point? Hmmm. One thing from your last post eludes me: when Notes is selected, and "Show Clip Outlines" is selected, I can't seem to select, move, or otherwise interact with the CLIP. I tried all manner or Ctr alt shift combos, right click etc. How do you move a clip when Notes is selected? No doubt I will kick myself when you tell me. Thanks for your patience. I feel my Perfect Sonar World is coming closer...

If Track View menu View > Display > Maximize Waveform Height is enabled, disable it to see clip headers. Use the clip header to select and drag clips.
