This tune is a song I wrote for www.coreluv.org several months ago and placed on itunes, cd baby, amazon, etc.   I wish that I could tell you that it generated income for the project, but todate, it has had dismal sales.  I would probably have done more for them by donating the cost of putting it on CD baby.  I did publicise it  on facebook and such with paid ads which generated a ton of hits.... but virtually no 99 cent downloads.  It may have helped if the organization itself had been a bit more proactive but they never even mentioned it on their webpage after approving the project.  I think it kind of fell thru the cracks.  Regardless, here is the song.

I was able to find it on your website at:

It works fine from there.

So, I listened to the song.  Nice songwriting, and I love your vocal performance, and the steel.  I have to say that I think this mix has a bit much compression on the drums and vocals (and maybe the master) for my taste.

I fixed the link.... kinda.    Thank you Walt. Overuse of compression  has been  a problem for me that I am going to work on. I have an entire body of work (26 songs or so) at Soundclick which probably all suffer from the same issue.  Even though I have been doing this for years, I never really started trying to understand the actual mechanics until recently.

I look forward to hearing your progress Steve.  I've been there too myself!  You're obviously a very good songwriter, vocalist, and steel player.

Hi Steve,
I don't know why, but I'm not able to open any of your songs on your website. I tried each one, and they all say "unable to play the file you requested ". Must be a problem on my end. Sorry man, I really wanted to check your music out. I love the sound of pedal steels. I'll keep trying.

Nice song. I like the writing effort you obviously put into this.

The song does has some issues to my ears. It does seem to be compressed too much. Over all and some of the individual instruments such as the drums (to my ears) .... I also hear a harshness in the vocal track that is high end related and makes it sound strange since it's not balanced properly.

GO back to the tracks and shut off the compressors.  Pull the EQ on the vocals down on the high end.  You need the top end to be rounded off so the harshness is not there but at the same time be sure it has air.....easier to do than to explain.

On my music I tend to not use much compression at all. Just a mild compression on the master bus output....

BTW:

Don't feel bad that the agency didn't assist you in any way shape or form.  I had a similar experience with a song I wrote.

Give Me A Chance http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10977017  a song that was written specifically for our local Pro-Life group which aided un-wed teen moms through the funding they received from churches, individuals, and community businesses. I signed the license for them for use in their advertising and in their fund raising events/video.  I spoke with the director of the group and found out they never used the song ..... yep, not even one time. I even contacted other similar agencies across my state and in several other states.... not one single group wanted to license the song and I was offering it at no cost. It really makes you wonder....am I missing something here?

Oh yeah.... the director was renting a house from me and in one of our conversations mentioned what she did for a living.... and then the talk turned to music and her problem with trying to find music that she could license for the fundraising events they do....I offered to write a song for the group...... when she heard this song, she loved it and actually wiped a tear.... so I don't have a clue why it wasn't ever used. I guess that's just how it goes...

Well, your energy and sincerity for the orphans is a beautiful thing and I commend you for that. I read your post above about your new found efforts to work on the compression thing and again I commend you. Your song writing and instrumentation and vocals are very good and nicely executed and I think once you can work out the mastering bugs, nothing will be able to stop you on creating some fine and creative masterpieces. Congrats on that and hope something good happens your way with the orphans. I know you would like to be able to give more to them and hopefully it will all come together for all.

Peace and Blessings, John
