Just picked up an Behringer X32 and S16 box and interested in using this setup for live recording.

Anyone out there using this combo and what do I need to look out for as far as setup?

I am going to dive into it this weekend a bit deeper to get used to the unit first.

I use it sometimes at the music school I work at. Works really well. Latency doesn't get super-low with my laptop but that isn't much of an issue considering all the monitor options available. We set it up to have 16 "live" channels and 16 computer channels (mostly for monitor mixes). I'm not sure you can record more than 16 channels simultaneously, which might be an issue for live.

You can also record a stereo mix directly to a USB stick for quick and dirty stuff. Oh and update to the latest firmware, they've been pretty cool about adding stuff since the release and there's no telling how long it sat on the shelf.

the firmware was 2 versions behind. That was one of the first things I did was update the firmware. I spent 9 hours watching videos on setup and use on Saturday. One of the only times I have ever been overwhelmed by a piece of gear in my life. It was a good overwhelm because I realized the possibilities of this setup! I am totally stoked about it and am going to try to get the recording setup this week. I have some lightpipe ADA8000 units I am going to try and use with the S16. I already see another S16 coming in the near future.

Haven't gotten it totally setup in SONAR yet, but it should be soon. I am using my PC now, but plan on ultimately using the laptop with SONAR.

I use this setup and it works great with very clear records for live bands! Let me know if you have any questions.

Side comment about the X-Touch which still isn't released... I wrote to Behringer and got a response...

Alex we assure you the X-Touch is not an urban myth. It has undergone a number of enhancements since it's initial unveiling in 2014 and we have spent a considerable amount of time and effort into making it work seamlessly with the X32/X AIR mixer families :) We will be making an official announcement when these controllers have started shipping from the factory. Thank you for your patience.

2016 then :)

Anyone using the S16 with SONAR too?

Don't have lot's of time for lengthy explanation right now, but I use X-32 Rack, S16 and the Dante interface instead of USB. I feel that the Dante is less flaky, better latency performance, and less prone to problems competing with my metric crap-ton of other USB devices. It is cool to put the S16 in the other room with drums and such while having the main unit for inputs in the control room. Also cool to take whatever combo to live recording events.

I'm a huge x32 fan, have done some live mixing on them, and intend to add one to my mobile mixing rig at some point (the 1U Core version). Brilliant bit of tech.

No idea about using it with Sonar, but posting to remind myself to check in on the thread.

I have an X32 and an S16 that I use regularly as the central part of my studio with X3.  I have also done remote recordings using the venue's X32 with a laptop that has my old Sonar 8.5. Everything works well.

The X32's flexibility while recording is what makes me content with my decision. Depending on the required number of input tracks, I can have untouched inputs right off the preamps and processed inputs (via the P16 bus) both recorded. Headphone mixes can have effects (reverb, compression) generated within the X32 with no concern about the latency settings of SONAR.

Moreover, I have three sets of speakers that are controlled from the X32, so the monitor controller function that would be separately necessary on a conventional interface is fully integrated and flexible.  I have an Audio-Technica condenser mic on the talkback channel.  I only use the Mackie Control features for quickly getting rough levels on captures before drawing volume automation.  In general I find that doing track volume automation with a mouse is fine with me once I've taken full advantage of the simultaneous changes and experimentation that's possible with a handful of 8 sliders to get the mix started in the right direction.

i would absolutely love to have the ability to toggle between track and bus fader control, but that doesn't work with the Mackie Control implementation in the X32.  I would also love to have the same 32-fader bi-directional, plus scribble strip support that the Reaper OSC functions have enabled for the X32.  Sigh, perhaps someday...

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Gary, can you reply in my other post about setting up the X32 as a controller? I am working that angle now. I have the DAW going through and recording as expected. It was a rough start, but after you finally realize the vas routing ability of this  X32, it became a lot clearer and seems to be quite simple for mixing and recording.

I am looking for a way now to automate the faders and FX to see if I can actually use it for live shows with midi devices and such.

I feel sorry for my UFX.  ;)
